From the following link: “the Work of Salvation” Missionary BroadcastQuote:Ward and stake council members, their spouses, full-time missionaries, and other interested Church members are invited to participate in a special session of the Seminar for New Mission Presidents entitled “The Work of Salvation,” which will be broadcast from the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. mountain daylight time. The program will be subsequently rebroadcast to many areas of the world. President Thomas S. Monson, President Boyd K. Packer, and members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will share messages about how members and missionaries work together in a unified effort.
Where necessary, local leaders should adjust scheduled worship services so that members are able to participate in the live broadcast of this historic event.A new website titled “Hastening the Work of Salvation: A Unified Effort in Conversion,
Retention, and Activation” will accompany the broadcast. The site provides information and helps for priesthood leaders, for ward councils and ward mission leaders, and for members and missionaries. It also helps youth know how they can best prepare for and participate in the work of salvation as they serve in the priesthood, receive temple ordinances, and accept calls as full-time missionaries.
i don’t think i have ever seen the mothership alter local church schedules to view a broadcast, other than GC. According to my DW, the temple workers in our temple were all abuzz with rumors about what this could be about. I wonder:1. Could this is the kickoff a new phase of “the rescue”?
2. Since the Church just added 50% to its missionary force, are members now supposed to be pressured more into providing more referrals?
3. Will this be the beginning of a rumored new-found honesty about church history and doctrine?
Speculations?
Fwiw, I have believed for almost 20 years that there will come a day when full-time missionaries are pulled out of areas with fully-functioning wards in order to meet the logistical needs when some countries finally allow full-time missionaries to teach in those countries. Using China as an example, we could send all of the missionaries currently serving in areas with fully-functioning wards to China and not meet the capacity of that country. I might or might not be right, but the change to Ward Missions, instead of Stake Missions, and the establishment of Ward Mission Leaders under the direction of the Bishop, means there is an organizational structure in place to accommodate losing full-time missionaries.
It will be interesting to see what comes from this broadcast – and I like that equal attention is being given to conversion, retention and activation. Hopefully, we will get more and more open conversation moving forward about the underlying causes of inactivity and cessation of attendance – and I am seeing that in various ways already.

the bkp factor…right.I don’t know what to expect on this one. I do know that the new convert baptisms rate was slowing a few years ago in North America. I think the women going on missions was a response to that….it will be interesting to see what the announcement is — it sounds like it’s not your average missionary work fireside/talk/meeting. All I got to say about this broadcast is that it was two hours of my life that I will never get back. Sorry! I had an interesting experience at the broadcast. I really liked a lot of what was said, but I was hoping that an announcement would be made increasing the amount of service hours the missionaries would be allowed to do. As it drew toward the end and Pres. Monson was about to speak, that thought went through my mind again – followed by the thought, not a voice:

I was left with my notes from the meeting, which contain some really good things. It wasn’t what I had hoped for, ultimately, but I am really glad I went. I have a personal mandate to do more in the way of service – and to make sure my ward does more, as well.
I agree, Ray, it was a fantastic broadcast. I loved Elder Nelson’s remarks about the gospel being for everyone and Heavenly Father at work to save all his children, not just church members. I went and thought that it was a decent meeting, but it wasn’t historic like they made it out to be. I was hoping for more and disappointed that there wasn’t more of what I wanted but I am sure others viewed it differently and I will just have to live with that. I like that when the talked about using councils that everyone needs to be listened to, including all the women. I was a little surprised that when they said that they were thinking about lowering the age for the missionaries that they talked to all the different organizations and got their input but they never mentioned that they got the Lords input or approval. That struck me as odd. I like that they are trying a few new things and even BKP’s talk was good and most times he is a real turn off for me. I think they see it as a given, so it wouldn’t cross their minds to say it.
I too was dissappointed with the lack of any new announcement. I did enjoy watching all those missionaried wiggle while the cameras scanned them. Kind of reninded me of my Primary kids. I do feel concern for all those kids with the mental image they have of conquering the world. I too like Ray was hoping to hear they would be doing more service. I do have hopes that they will have direction to do so coming from their area seventy. They seemed to make a point about following the seventy, which could be great or super scary. Nervous for our area. I believe the guilt and coercion will be laid on thick. I am so hoping people heard the part about “invititing out of love”.
I was trying to be optimistic. Cwald you sound like my husband. I heard some positive, but not sure if the information was “unprecedented”.

I agree. I will be interested to see how this actually plays out. I consider my job to be loving and serving others – “familiar with all and free with my substance.” But I will probably go my whole life without asking anyone to hear from the missionaries. I don’t know where that leaves The Work. ?
