Sometimes I have questions that I would like answered but I don’t want to ask questions if they have already been answered on this site. How do I do a good search? I have tried searching out topics but I get obscure posts that have some of the same words. Are there ways to format a search to be more specific? I have the same problem. On a forum with as many posts as this one, it can be hard to find anything relevant. One thing that’s helped me a little is to do Advanced Search (top right, beneath the regular search bar). Enter your search terms and for “Display results as” choose Topics. That way the search results will be displayed as a list of topics instead of a list of individual posts, and it can be a bit easier to sift through and find something that seems promising. It’s worked for me a few times, anyway. A few times I’ve just posted my question and asked other members with a better history of the discussions to help me find something relevant if they can. If they can’t, then people generally chime in with answers anyway.
Ask. I mean that. I have a pretty good memory for things that have been asked in the past, so I often link to previous posts just so people who haven’t seen them can read the comments from people who aren’t participating anymore.
I think it’s great when new people search our archives, but please never feel like you can’t ask something unless you’ve scoured our archives first.
common_twit, Don’t worry too much about past threads. Ask your questions or make a statements. If it lines up exactly with a previous thread, someone will post a link to that thread and you can read for hours combing trough 47 pages of responses, some of which are related to the original question. For me, I prefer the ‘current’ threads anyway, because they are more alive than the archived threads. This community is very dynamic. If you go back to a thread that hasn’t had a post for 2 years, you’ll see a lot of different people. If you could go forward 2 years and start a thread, there will be different people from those participating now. For my taste, I prefer to hear from this community, as it is today, and I’m not very interested in reading the archives.
