ParticipantAs we embark on our favorite bi-Annual conference season, I share with you the words of one Brother Robert Kirby of the Salt Lake Tribune Ward, following his message we will close our meeting with “Onward Christian Soldiers” and we will stand adjourned for six months. Brother Kirby.

Quoting a general authority conference talk was the ultimate trump card in a theological debate among Mormons. If it was uttered from the podium in the Tabernacle, it was the same thing as fact. This is not the case.
He’s right, it’s not the case.
But… He’s also right that some members see it as fact.
Which is why I love our quotes thread. Lots of the quotes are from general conferences through the ages. I love having those “trump cards” for talks and lessons.

ParticipantThanks. Kirby reflects my feelings about conference exactly. I’m sure there are lots of TBMs out there (ones who dare to read Kirby, anyway) who are simply outraged that any heretic can believe something said in GC is not scripture/doctrine/commandment! April 5, 2014 at 12:20 pm #184355DarkJedi

Good point, Mac. I’ve actually been surprised at how just saying “Pres. Uchtdorf said it’s not that simple” stops some conversations (gossip?) dead in their tracks.

ParticipantQuote:Being Mormon, I figure my job is to listen to the talks (or wait for the conference reports to come out) and then make up my mind. Been doing that for 40 years and I havenโt led myself astray yet.
Yep.
