Yeah, I have been involved in a Facebook conversation about it. The website was established a week ago, apparently, which is even worse.

The site says all of the profits will go to the missionary fund, but, even if that is completely true, it is a terrible, no-good, very bad idea. They also say they are selling the items for only the cost of production and shipping (which would be a contradiction of donating profits to the missionary fund), but I have enough experience in retail to look at the prices and say they are higher than the cost of production and ahipping. It just smacks of an appearance of Priestcraft and, even if not, simply is tacky and ill-conceived. Their motivation might be pure (and they might not be making anything from it), but . . . No.

My hope is that this will be short-lived – and that Elder Durrant didn’t know about it. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt right now, but it is razor thin.

Sit and ponderize that for a moment.

It looks like the statement about selling the items at just the cost of shipping and postage has been taken off the home page. Instead, the statement about the profits going to the missionary fund now is there, as well as where it was originally on the “About” page.

Also, the wristband cost is hifpgher now than it was this afternoon.

    *sigh*

As I said, even if there is no profit to them from this, it is a stinkingly poor move.

They didn’t ponderize how this might look.

Too often, I see non-profit organizations declare that all profits go to some wonderful cause, but they then turn around and pay their management obscenely well.

    SMH.

[Admin Note]: There is a comment from a new participant that has not been approved saying they probably got reluctant permission from the First Presidency or other leaders. I think the chances of that having happened are as close to 0% as is possible.

To the person who wrote that comment, please write an introduction we can approve, so we all can get to know you better.

It looks to me like this has caused widespread criticism, so the original plan was scrapped and changed considerably. That is only a guess, but it is an educated guess.

Well I originally thought the elder who spoke was the one who started the website. Now that I am more informed I agree with your assessment Ray.

I wish he had instead pulled out a bag of Doritos. Product placement at GC. Wonders never cease. Also, “ponderize” is plagiarized: http://www.amazon.com/Think-These-Things-Ponderize-Joyful/dp/1494808781

I blogged about the problem of the Faith Biz here: http://www.wheatandtares.org/16121/passing-the-heavenly-grift/

“One could argue that this is priestcraft, if an actual dictionary definition for priestcraft existed. But you could likewise argue (as I would, vociferously) that selling any religious book is a version of priestcraft, that EFY and Time Out for Women speakers and those who claim they can cure homosexuality are practicing priestcraft, especially if it is their primary source of income. [4] If there’s a Faith Crisis Biz, there’s also a Faith Biz.”
