I am absolutely not trying to begin a political discussion…

That said, I am a stake PA assistant and we just got an email about how the church wants to film church members who are helping Syrian refugees. We are asked to spread the word to our ward members so that they can contact the church PA dept. if they want to be in the film.

The “mood” of those who are most vocal in my sphere is that they don’t want to support refugees, so I’m hesitant to send out the PA email to ward members. I’m not sure I would be ready to for the “backlash.” :)

Has anyone else felt this vibe?

Most I have talked to feel they wish the churh or someone should help their dire situation. A few have mentioned after the Paris attack that they think many refugees are ISIS in hiding, so they want to be careful, we don’t know who to trust these days.

Those are the only vibes I’ve received.

If the request is coming from the Church, I say send it out quickly.

Some members need a wake-up call in regard to how they view refugees, and the conservative ones might get that sort of slap if they know the Church is encouraging we help.

We, of all people, ought to be conscious of helping refugees.

The above CNN interview is worth 3 minutes of your day.

    It gives perspective.

And that was published over a year ago. Interesting.

    Definitely worth the listen.

I visited a Baptist church with pamphlets about the violent nature of Islam. It read just like any anti-Mormon literature I have ever seen. Quoting scripture etc. in a way to make it look like Muslims believe xyz. That may be the interpretation of some extremist Muslim groups, but does not necessarily reflect the whole. Just as we do not want to be painted with the same brush as the Fundamentalists or the Danites, we should be careful not to do so to other groups.

A few years ago I read a few other religious texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Quran and quickly realized that what I was missing is how much weight is placed on each scripture by the living religious communities. If I were a Buddhist and started reading the Old Testament from the beginning I might get some very wild ideas about 21st century Christianity.
