All will/will not hear the gospel.

Today in HP meeting a familiar topic came up about all those who will never have a chance to hear or accept the gospel will have a chance in the after life to choose to accept or not. I know I have heard that many times before and it makes me want to ask about being tried and tested. So I did, I asked when will this take place, during the millennium? Satan will be bound and there will be no temptation or influence so not really a choice. After the millennium? Before? What about being tried and tested? There was a lot of commotion and bouncing around but no answer. It surprises me that this question and discussion had not come up before. There was an air of “there he goes again, questioning doctrine”. I stayed out of the short discussion but still would like to know how that adds up. I was very surprised no HP could explain it. “The gospel will be shared in the four corners of the earth” also comes to mind but the Indians living in jungles of South America were given as examples of entire populations who will never know the concept of a restored gospel. Can’t imagine that a choice will be given in the after life when our eyes will be open. Seems more like an possible assignment. Any resources to look up about this?

I feel like I sound like a broken record on topics like this. The reason no one can answer the question is because we don’t know the answer. We know very little about the pre or post earth lives and much of what is said is supposition or speculation – including that all will hear the gospel. It is one of the questions that I have always had and in my TBM days I just let it go. In my current state of belief I also let it go, but now I do it by choosing to focus on the here and now as opposed to some future unknown.

Seems like we could say anything we want and declare it to be truth.

Dj said it …we don’t know. Mormonism does seem to give more answers than other religions but in the process leaves many new and unanswered questions. I am growing more and more agnostic about truth and religion, focusing on living a good life I can feel proud of when I die.

Kipper, Well, I think it’s fair to say that we don’t know the detail and can’t know the detail. However, as a doctrine, I think this is one of very best doctrines of the Church. I mean, most Christian denominations have believed that those who are not Christians in this life are bound for eternal torment in hell. Even among Christians, there can be the belief that only 144K will be saved. I think this particular doctrine is reflective of the over-the-top optimism of LDS Theology.

My own feeling is that individual’s lives will matter. Meaning that the whole of a person’s life is much more important than a decision to follow Christ. After that, I like the LDS concept of people going where they will be the most comfortable.

So for me not “hearing” the gospel doesn’t matter much. What matters is how one lived with what they had.

Then I imagine our loving Father scooping us up into His eternal bosom with limitless capacity to love, understand, and forgive.
