    Quote:

SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is combining its two leadership handbooks into a single, smaller, digital-only handbook that will be fully available to the public when it is released Feb. 19.

The new leadership manual’s title is “General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” The streamlined book will reduce content from the current leadership manuals by 20%.

    Quote:

The new handbook will contain 38 chapters. The English version of the first nine chapters will be released Feb. 19 at ChurchofJesusChrist.org and the Gospel Library app. The other 29 chapters will be updated throughout this and next year.

No more chasing down references and policies in a handbook that isn’t available to you.

I suspect the 20% reduction is mostly related to removing redundant information that appears in both of the current handbooks.

We had a GA last stake conference. He said he was on the committee for this new handbook and said it was coming soon. He said the simplification was mostly in “procedural” matters and didn’t elaborate.

I know that a lot of people are energized by saying this is revelation and part of the ongoing restoration. In my mind, that cheapens those terms and this looks like it’s purely administrative procedure, in large measure a response to people leaking updates to the handbook and how accessible Handbook 1 is online now.

It’s a part of the ongoing restoration.

We’ve finally restored the single mega-handbook that is only accessible online, just like the primitive church! 😈

Wondering how it will compare to what we currently have.

Now there won’t be the secret book.

No wait, that was the golden one.

    So confused.

Transparency is a step in the right direction. No more looking for the secret version though. The hunt for it was more fun than having it.

I would have to assume some of the stuff that REALLY sounds bad to outsiders will be removed. I read (studied) the 2010 version when it came out since I was new to being in the bishopric. There were some things that I don’t think they would want shown to just anybody (odd stuff like, “A couple should consult with their bishop before deciding to have a vasectomy” I don’t think most bishops want to talk about that! The vast majority of the older HB1 was     , but I even remember as a believer thinking, “Wow 😯 – that is interesting that the say that or say it in that way.”

Strike another mark for “outside pressure pushing changes the church.” I think a common criticism was that the entire “church courts” procedures were not something that the person being called would even know. And I see this change is for the good.

I never understood why it wasn’t public in the first place. Though it was kind of nice feeling like I had privileged information after I found Handbook 1 online for the first time.

    Transparency is good. Baby steps.
