I’ve heard a few people mention Facebook pages they visit that are related to the mission behind StayLDS or NOM. What Facebook pages or other communities do you recommend? Personally I’ve visited NOM and am not impressed by their community. It seems to be mainly a bunch of complainers and critics with very little actual good being done. Forgive me if I’ve gotten the wrong impression.

I personally am not a fan of Mormon themed Facebook groups. I simply don’t think it is a good medium to discuss religion, especially faith crisis.

NOM goes in cycles. Right now it’s bottoming out. You also learn who to take with a grain of salt. Watch out for the guy that goes by cwald and another guy that goes by Thoreau.

I do the NOM thing and I like it pretty well. I agree that it goes in cycles but there is a lot of information on it and they do discuss more the negative aspects of the church and the latest topics. I post under dashwilson on that board. Not a fan of Facebook and religion, either. I just don’t think it’s the right place for discussion of religion and politics. And for the most part they’re like most of what else is on the web – either blindly TBM or anti. FWIW, I have also visited NOM, maybe a little more than you did. My impression was the same, though, even though I probably consider myself to be leaning in that direction. No offense to anyone here (I love cwald, Thoreau, and church0333), but for the most part the site tends to be too negative for my liking.
I’m not a fan of anything overly religious on FB and I don’t like anything relating to politics at all. More often than not there’s too much contention associated with religious and political posts on FB so I try to set myself apart by refraining from either topic. I don’t think I’d participate in a FB group with the same mission as StayLDS (I still have yet to visit NOM). Right now it still feels like a very private journey for me. I’m still in my cocoon but one day I think I’ll have to emerge in order to grow, and butterflies can’t hide their colors from the world. I’ll have to be ready for that.
The “A Thoughtful Faith” Facebook group is one worth checking out. I find it has a good tone, similar to this site. Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Thanks for the perspectives, everyone. One of the things I have liked the most about Facebook is that I’m exposed to political ideas that I would never have encountered otherwise. I don’t have a TV and I don’t read the news, so FB is often my only outlet for that. However, I had forgotten that I can’t be anonymous on FB. So maybe that will have to wait until I feel more comfortable that way. The nice thing about the thoughtful face and Mormon stories groups on Facebook is that they are closed groups so nobody sees what you have posted unless they’re in that group. I dropped out of all FaceBook groups earlier last year. It became too much of a time-suck. I decided to rejoin the main Mormon Stories Podcast FB group, but mostly so I could just monitor the DAMU news. FaceBook is very much lacking in moderation an group management tools. That’s why we never pushed to setup an active presence there.
The main Mormon-themed FB group I still participate in is called “Meaningless Additional FaceBook Group Loosely Associated With Mormonism.”
😆 It’s a parody group about Mormon social media groups, and the conversations have to be pointless or they risk being moderated. It’s very therapeutic.
