Oct. 2009 was the last time Pres. Monson didn’t speak at either Saturday regular session. He did speak at the priesthood session that time.

At one point Cook came out of nowhere with a comment about how people leaving due to doubt isn’t nearly as big a problem as the critics claim it to be. I don’t get why they dedicate any time during GC to address the critics. IMO GC should be a “message of Christ to the world” but we get apostles taking pot shots at critics from the pulpit. A forum from which there can conveniently be no rebuttal.

This sort of thing happened last conference as well.

I’m right there with you buddy. I’m trying hard to control myself. Since we will never see those kinds of records there is no way for either side to prove the things he said about those leaving. As I said, he started out so well….

Eh, I’ll choose to take the good things he said.

Overall a really, really good session, you just have to ignore a small phrase or two here and there.

Yeah, I’m good with not reading the ones I didn’t like and giving fair warning if asked.

I’m listening on an audio only feed that drops from time to time so I miss who says what but one talk had one blurb that I felt stood up against traditional family roles in declaring that men and women are equal in authority. I wish I could remember who and what specifically.

That maaaay have been the same talk a sentence or two after.

Anyway, finally have a moment to sit on my phone again. Agreed that Saturday afternoon had some excellent moments that I personally enjoyed, and those moments for me came from the three Seventies who talked. I loved the one about saints and sinners and trying.

That part in Cook’s talk you all mentioned already is where I just turned off from the session. It was close enough to the end that as soon as he went that way I nope’d the opposite direction.

I was glad to see them quote Pope Francis as well as Nelson Mandela. Those are two of the great prophets of our time.

It’s easy for me to pick out negativity. Elder Ballard can go either way for me, but this one was a bit too “thou shalt” for me. Not really a horrible talk, just not warm and fuzzy enough for me, and I think I have figured it out – young men are supposed to get married.

Elder Soares (sp) is doing a run-of-the-mill stay on course, follow the prophet, with an obligatory don’t look at porn thrown in. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for, move along. He did do an atonement testimony at the end, like several others have done today.

More standard fare from Brother Gibson, being good husbands and fathers. Nothing really good, nothing really bad. Pres. Uchtdorf up next, followed by Pres. Eyring.

I think DFU is currently speaking indirectly to people that don’t have an orthodox testimony. Why are we here? (in the PH session) but I think he’s really answering the question, why stay in the church. Of course that’s tainted by my perspective.

    Edit:

    😯

Yeah, that’s exactly what he’s doing. He’s speaking directly to people in our shoes.

    Edit 2:

Yeah, drop mic. Conference over.

Pres. Uchtdorf – trying to appear better than we are. Good story about stake’s goals switching to love and compassion which can’t be measured. “Many things that can be counted don’t count, things that can’t be counted count.” The Savior would ask about our hearts. Ask yourself why you are here. Most bonfires begin as a simple spark. God can make you what you desire to be, giving the example of his own early life as a poor refugee from a war torn place. We come to church to heal problems, not hide them. God resists the proud, gives grace to the humble, also references atonement. Love and serve as Christ did.

    Best talk so far IMO.

Good lord, I am bringing many copies of Uchtdorf’s talk with me on my mission.

Pres. Eyring, prayer and revelation required to exercise priesthood. Quoted D&C 20, says we can’t do those things without the Holy Ghost and we need to pray for help from the Holy Ghost.

Nothing offensive that I see, standard Pres. Eyring stuff.

Hopefully you are going to a mission that uses iPads!

I have a friend who’s ex works in the IT security department of the Church. He’s told her a few times that he wishes the Church would trust their missionaries more, because the amount of software the Church puts on every single piece of electronics is just insane. Don’t know why I mention that now, except nooo I don’t want an iPad, I’m hoping to leave most of my dependency on technology behind for 18 months. D: Paper copies, ftw!
