    Hello.

I deal with SAD every year, and this year seems to be very bad. For the past two weeks, I have spent the entire weekend in bed. I can’t take care of myself. Just the thought of showering, cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry is painful. I only want to sleep. The only things that brings any energy and joy into my life are the classes I teach and my students. Unless I am teaching, I can’t get out of bed. And I don’t have any interactions with other human beings outside of work.

I have a therapist who I see every few weeks, and I take medication. I try to use light to help me. There doesn’t seem to be anything else I can do.

Of course, it doesn’t help that I’m tormented about my sexuality and “losing my religion”. Anyway. Just writing these things helps me to feel a little bit better. Thanks for being there.

I don’t have any advice. Just hang in there. I’ll send some prayers your way…and a virtual hug.

Oh, I soooo hear you on this. I think I am just plain ‘sunshine deficient’.

I hate short, dark days. They make me feel like I’m living in a cave.

One thing I do that helps me a little, is to put on my beach music. It’s amazing how good I feel listening to James Taylor sing Summer’s Here, The Zac Brown band singing Knee Deep or Blake Shelton singing Some Beach. I just close my eyes and listen and I find myself smiling…

Here’s hoping you find a little happy behind your own eyelids, turinturambar.

I’d hug you but I’m all sweaty from the 100 degree afternoon sun and greasy from the sunscreen. And then there’s that thin layer of gritty sand that’s covered me head to toe…

As long as I’m imagining… you and I are clinking cold glasses of somethin’er’nother and digging our toes in the sand.

Can’t you just feel the warmth oozing through your sunglasses and warming your eyelids as you just soak it up?

Thank you, mercy! Sometimes I wish we had a holodeck like they do on Star Trek, and could take a one hour virtual vacation to any place in the whole universe.

It’s not having what you want

    It’s wanting what you’ve got

I’m gonna soak up the sun

So sorry to hear about your depression. I don’t suffer from SAD but it’s a gloomy time of year nonetheless. I feel ill equipped to offer anything but sympathy but if sympathy helps, you’ve got mine!

I have recently started playing racquet ball almost daily. My friend calls me and I like going so it gives me a good reason to get up and do something. Maybe you could give something like that a try. Hang in there and keep up the councilng.

I believe SamBee had a thread on this. I mentioned there that my wife suplements 2000iu of vitamin D in the winter as she suffers the winter blues. That and a multi-vitamin does wonders for the winter months. It is cheap and doesn’t hurt to see if it helps you. I think SamBee said he thought it helped….maybe will pipe up (that thread was only a month or so back)

Yes, they have and I recommend taking multivitamins definitely. I noticed a difference within days.

Exercise and decent social contact too.

Half of the battle is getting out and about. Just because you don’t feel moving doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. Force yourself. Don’t sleep in.

This time of year is bad because of the cumulative effect of nov, dec, & jan.

Meet you on the holodeck at noon? Of course, the time doesn’t really matter. It’s always five o’clock somewhere! Cue Allan Jackson and Jimmy Buffet…

Oh how I love the sound of the waves crashing ;)

I’m bipolar with SAD. I can empathize. It is a hard work to make myself so things I don’t want to do. It is a constant battle with yourself and at times I fail anyway. Religion crisis doesn’t help either. I just moved here from Utah and it gets lonely around here too. Hang in there.

I feel for you, I really do. Several members in my family have been diagnosed with depression & sometimes I feel I have inherited it as well, so I have at least a tiny hint of understanding of what you are going through.

I pray things get better for you. Its a tough spot you’re in right now.

Don’t forget to take 2000 units vitamin d each day in the winter
