    come on

we’ve all heard them at some point

worshipping the great hippo (maybe confusing Mormon with moomin)

horns that have to be trimmed

    tails

we’ve all heard more than our share of “urban myths” surrounding the church

what are the best ones youve heard

I read someone speculating once about a connection between the name “Mormon” and an ancient Babylonian god named “Mormo” (I guess that was the phonetic pronunciation, it would have been written in cuneiform and not english characters).

Mormo was a god of “death.” So Mormons really worshipped the Babylonian god of death and didn’t know it… *palmface* WOW! What a tricky secret… 😆

I heard a weird one on the b’nacle that the temple spires were there to impale Christ and his angels at the second coming. You know, as opposed to all the other spires on all the other religions’ buildings. 🙄

hawk, that’s a new one for me. I like it!!

I’ve shared this elsewhere, but my oldest son actually had a friend in high school whose mother told him that Mormons have horns. She knew it was true, because she heard it from her minister. My son told his friend that it was true, but that we cut them off at birth and filed them regularly so nobody would see them. He then asked her if she wanted to feel them.

He parted his hair a little and said, “Rub really slowly right here.” She did. He said, “Do you feel anything?” She said, “No.” He said . . .

    “Not even stupid?”

    I love my son.

I remember someone asking me if I got additional planets (to rule over) as a reward for serving a mission for the Church.

I always get a kick out of the way some men in the mid 1800’s would talk about the worlds they may posses in the next life.

Stephen Marsh has an ongoing series at the MormonMatters blog. He’s done several posts over the past couple months on the topic of False Doctrines in the Church. This thread is sort of along that topic. You can find the posts here:

mm, I’ve heard that one for decades. I can’t be sure, but I think it originated in the 70’s.

Some of my favorites are the ones from inside the Church about famous people who supposedly are Mormon. Steve Martin is the one that comes up the most, but Lionel Richie was claimed for a while – until he cheated on his wife. For some reason, the rumor stopped after that.

One more: that Yoda was modeled after Spencer W. Kimball, and the Force is the Priesthood. Actually, I can see the resemblance between Yoda and Pres. Kimball, but it was funny then and still is funny now.

I was under the belief for a while that the Chick-Fil-A company closes their stores on Sundays because the owners of the company were Mormon. Now I moved to the city where their headquarters is located, and that doesn’t seem to be the case. I think maybe the company might have seemed “Mormon” to some people because they gained popularity (or market share) earlier in Utah, before spreading more widely to more states.

I heard many years ago that you could get a 10% discount at any Marriott if you showed your temple recommend. I doubt that is true, but I never attempted it.

One girl I knew thought that missionaries were only supposed to use the bathroom on P day.

Another was that we were digging a tunnel under the U.S. from the temple in SLC to Washington D.C. to take over the government.
