So I got an email reminding me that a Stake priesthood meeting is scheduled for this Sunday at 7 a.m.. Our stake always has its priesthood meetings at 7 a.m.. Anyone else out there think this is a little crazy? Needless to say, I won’t be there.
Early risers think everyone’s an early riser. At least in business they do, so I suspect they do also in church. I hate those people too. Priesthood leadership in my area is made up largely by farmers. They think nothing of 7:00 meetings. I’ve heard of ones as early as 6:00. Just do what the college kids do for their early classes. Show up in pajama pants. 😆 I grew up in a ward/stake where all of the leadership and most of the members were farmers or ranchers. Our quarterly stake priesthood meetings were at 6 a.m. I’m really not too surprised by the 7:00 am meeting on Sunday. Many Mormons have a strong devotion to Church business. Personally, I wouldn’t attend. Sunday is my only day off and I work approximately 65 hours a week. I depend on Sunday mornings as a time to catch up on my sleep. I’m thankful my ward does not meet until 1pm.
I hate going to those early morning meetings too. I love to be uplifted, but the leadership should schedule the meetings later in the day. Just for the record, I don’t attend Stake Priesthood Meetings in my locale, which are always at 7 in the evening. I might go if it were at 1PM, but either 7 is a non-starter. If you were in the church long enough ago, 7AM priesthood hearkens back to the days before going to the block schedule in 1980. Every priesthood meeting was early. It consisted of brief opening exercises and classtime, which was 1/3 business. Total meeting was one-hour. Then go home, then come back a bit later for Sunday School, which was still in the morning. That meeting was 90 minutes, consisting of opening exercises, which had the “sacrament gem” and sacrament (junior sunday school was in a separate “junior sunday school room” with it’s own sacrament), then on to classes, then go home and return in the afternoon, sometimes quite late, for another 90-minute Sacrament Meeting on wood benches with no padding. Primary and RS were held during the week every week. Primary was usually in the mornings during the summer, and after school the rest of the year. SWK may be best known for lifting the Priesthood Ban, but going to the block schedule was probably just as radical and more impactful for most members of the church.
And actually, any other meeting other than the 3 hour block is too early. This includes PEC, BYC, WC, Stake Conference Saturday meetings, Stake priesthood meeting (I dont think Ive ever gone to one of these despite my 42 years in the church). The ironic thing is that 90% of anyone attending at a given time does not ever want to be in said meeting. AND 90% of what goes on in the meeting is superfluous, repetative and boring. Just like business meetings. I hate meetings.
