I enjoyed reading this, and felt a bit spiritual when I saw MLK’s advice in the letter, and his typwritten signature.

Ok, so what are the implications for non-traditional Mormons in traditional LDS culture?

Here are a few:

1. Seek out a friend who is also unorthodox and in whose wisdom you trust to not upset the traditional believers. I don’t see this working in a face-to-face setting, but I do see it working online.

2. If it becomes too stressful to be unorthodox in an orthodox world, then don’t be afraid to grant yourself a bit of time to adjust — perhaps by minimizing your involvement.

3. Don’t be flagrant in defying time honored beliefs that the traditional believers hold. Show respect for them, but also stand your ground so you can hold your place on the bus.

4. Don’t resort to arguing or initiate conversations that might be offensive to traditional believers.

5. Act with courtesy and respect toward traditional believers as you attend the Ward with them.

Otherwise, I don’t see the analogy very well here….at its basis, its about integrating with a majority population that ostracizes people who are different, but I don’t see much else in this to help unorthodox people integrate with traditional MOrmons.

You are right SilentDawning the list isn’t a straight across match. I am glad you found inspiration in it. Like you I loved the typewritten signature at the bottom.
