Thanks for all the replies. It is good to get many perspectives, especially on controversy.

The following was posted on Facebook by a friend who has a great sense of humor. Please take it in that spirit – as an attempt to lighten the mood slightly and find a way to laugh a bit. It is NOT meant in any other way:

Say whatever negative thing you want about John Dehlin, he’s the most sincere and humble man that’s ever issued 22 press releases about himself.

I like to think that John Dehlin would laugh, too.

It is somewhat ironic that John is accused of apostasy for his very public statements of unbelief and yet this also seems to decry individuals staying in the church and being very quiet (β€œdeceitful”) about their unbelief. What would the author suggest those with varying levels of doubts/unbelief do?

Oh, I love the irony!

Dehlin resumed open criticism of the LDS Church by publishing recordings of sacred temple ordinances which members are instructed not to discuss outside the temple

I’m unfamiliar with this. I have a hard time believing this happened or else it would likely be cited in his excommunication letter.

I believe this is referring to an interview John did with a brother that claims to have received an “out of the norm” ordinance in the temple. The description was very detailed, and it did go way past the bounds that most active members would be comfortable with – even though I doubt a non-member audience would think it disrespectful. John decided not to publish the interview on the MS website, but he did allow his interviewee to take the recorded interview for his own personal use. It became publicly available through post-Mormon sources and John is held responsible.

That is the situation that comes to mind for me at least.

Yeah, that would be considered apostasy by pretty much any “believing” member I know. Even I see that as way over the line.
