There’s a very interesting article on Inside Higher Ed written by a non-Mo in Pocatello.

    http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2012/05/29/essay-about-prejudice-academe-against-mormons” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2012/05/29/essay-about-prejudice-academe-against-mormons

He describes overt statements of bias against Mormons among his peers in academia, and then asks why this is acceptable. Of course, we’ve heard this before, but it got me to thinking about the overt bigotry against Mormons. One of his comments I thought was very insightful:

    Quote:

Glenn Beck is a Mormon, but so is Harry Reid. Other famous Mormons are or were: Harmon Killebrew, Jack Dempsey, J. W. Marriott, Gladys Knight, the Osmonds, Butch Cassidy, and Eldridge Cleaver. What does that tell you about Mormonism? Absolutely nothing.

The poignancy of this quote to me goes right to the heart of all forms of bigotry and stereotyping – just because Glenn Beck and I both happen to be LDS doesn’t mean we have anything else in common. You can not draw any comparisons between me and Steve Young just because we were both born into the same church. If you know a close-minded Mormon who subjugates his wife, that has no bearing on whether I’m close minded or ill treat my wife. Consequently, if you know an enlightened Mormon, it doesn’t necessarily mean I’m open minded, either.

In my profession I’ve noticed subtle bias against Mormons. Many folks I work with don’t even know I’m Mormon – I didn’t go to BYU, I don’t have a portrait of JS in my office, and I don’t use my Mormon status as a calling card. I’ve always found it interesting that folks who would consider themselves very enlightened and “post-racial” will nonetheless openly profess a bias against a group of people based on their religion. I think it’s a danger we all face; particularly in the past 11 years in relation to Islam.

Yes, there is bigotry (and I’ve experienced some blatant bigotry in my life) – but our history of persecution and the resulting persecution complex doesn’t help. Neither does our general habit of making things secret that don’t have to be secret.

Our general disdain for others doesn’t help, as well. If we collectively were more Christ-like (especially in areas we dominate demographically), much of the bigotry would disappear – or be so obvious to everyone else that it would be ineffective.

    Yeah Mormons! :D

Because the church is true, evil forces combine to try to stop the work from progressing, even persecuting the faithful as a large and spacious building mocks those clinging to the iron rod.

    :shifty:

….oh wait, Jews, Christians, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhists have also been discriminated against, not to even mention racial, gender, or sexual orientation discrimination. So either every group is Gods work being worked on by evil, which makes little sense to me, or I prefer to look at it as people are sometimes ignorant to others and it shows in many areas of our society. There’s not much deeper explanation in it than that, to me.

I don’t subscribe to the thoughts Mormons have it worse than others.

That’s because the survey was limited among Mormons to my wife.
