Do we still have any of his kind left in the church today? http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2005/10/golden/ I used to listen to tapes made about him. Loved that man, but wonder if a person like him would be completely muzzled today in the church. I miss some real down to earth laughter in the lds church today. Paul Dunn was the last one that was really fun to me and it was unfortunate he got carried away. It seems that so much gets to be regimented and formal in the church today. Prayers often sound generic, and lessons read from the manual. How much out of the norm can you be in the church and still accepted?

From what little I know about this man, I love him for the fact that he used his own voice. How often do we hear formulaic statements, prayers etc? He sounds like J Golden Kimball, not someone parroting someone else.

Why is he compared to Mark Twain though?

Fwiw, our Gospel Doctrine teacher today read a quote from the mid-1800’s in her lesson that used “damn” or “damned” three times – and pronounced it as written each time.

    She’s a very good teacher.

I posted this on the thread about GAs writing their talks.

The story as I heard it about J. Golden Kimball was that Pres. Grant became exasperated at his language so he wrote out a talk for him for the next conference. Things started ok but then Elder Kimball stopped, turned and and said, “Hell, Heber, I can’t read your damn writing.”

I have to admit “hell” and “darn” are barely even considered swearwords here anymore (and if they are, shouldn’t “OMG”, which I see everywhere, be in the same boat?)
