Making Peace by Eugene England

“Making Peace” (Signature Books, 1995) is a collection of personal essays written by Eugene England throughout his life. Some struck me more directly and personally than others, but I enjoyed them all. Several were published in Sunstone and Dialogue, such as the first in the book: “Healing and Making Peace in the Church and the World” (Sunstone April ’92) England has a couple common themes that run throughout the book, including non-violence, mercy/forgiveness, tolerance of diversity. It helped me to see my own self-righteousness in my self-perceived enlightenment, and several other useful insights.

I highly recommend it, especially for those who may be actively seeking a path to peace.

Thanks for the review, Eugene England can probably be considered and counted among the first generation of moderate “rebels” and is someone we should be thinking about as we work out our issues here. He was an example of someone who did manage to be creative while still within the Church, though under increasing pressure towards the end of his career.
