I have a 19 year old, autistic son, who just completed his final class final of his high school career. It has been a remarkable experience. Long years of extra effort, late nights, state standardized test redo’s, multiple schools, including homeschooling, online schooling, private and public schooling.

There is no one behind him. We have scaled completely a life mountain I never imagined.

Time for a happy Mom cry.

Congratulations to him & your family.

What does he want to do now?

How does he feel about completing this goal?

Minyan Man – He is relieved. A bit exhausted to, the past 48 hours have been intense. We had a saying between he and I when things got rough, “No one is ever tired on the day of victory.” It used to work most of the time. Jubilation of achievement would make up for the pressure. Tonight, it’s the opposite. He just wants to sleep.

Next week he begins an internship with a local Autism group. From there we will see. One step at a time for him.

Congratulations — you deserve a graduation ceremony too!

This is great, and I think the diploma isn’t the most valuable thing from this. I would assume it is the confidence he has that he can “make it” in this world. That is invaluable.

    Well done!

    BTW …

http://www.npitx.org This link is to a group that teaches programming to adults in the spectrum. I know they are expanding nationally .. Just a heads up for another possible resource for future education

We’re still in the midst of the struggle with our 10 yr old autistic son. Maybe 1/2 time homeschooling for next year? It has to be something different.

My son also just graduated from high school. He’s not autistic but has ADD and poor social skills. He has struggled academically and socially his whole life. Even as recently as three weeks ago, there was some question as to whether he would graduate. I just kept saying to myself “just a little more…just a little more.” Like your son, his challenges aren’t over but it is one major hurdle to get over.

Parents of children without disabilities generally don’t understand what parents of such children have to go through. I came across the following link a while ago and it has given me great comfort. http://www.our-kids.org/Archives/Holland.html

    Good luck with your son!
