Be nice to the new guy, Ray.

    Inside jokes are awesome. :D

SGoodman, that comment wasn’t meant to be as brusque as it sounds. 🙂

Glad it was interpreted as it was intended. :D

To the subject of paranoia. A member of the SP emailed a link to the church’s official response about the church discipline cases in the news. He sent it to the entire stake, without comment. I interpreted it as mildly threatening but it could have been sent to simply share information.

I do think it speaks volumes that so many are worried about speaking their mind. Probably not a positive sign.

Hmm, Interesting. Nothing of the sort has happened here (at least not yet). Could be just a guy doing something because he felt like everyone should know, or perhaps he has fielded some questions.

Bad SP. Bad communication. I took a few communication courses, and this SP needs to make it clear what he means by sending the link to everyone. Otherwise, the grapevine takes over and people make their own assumptions — often, the wrong ones!!!

    To Old-Timer

No worries. If I were apt to be wounded by a post as benign as that, I shouldn’t be allowed on the internet. 😆

I think I’m up to speed on the KK / JD situation. I pointed to that in my post as example and explanation, not to divert the thread. I was actually trying to address the OP and her concern over possible retribution by the Church for …. whatever. That’s how we got to “nobody gets ambushed by a letter out of the blue.” Church discipline is the end of a very long process (or the middle if you include the road back). It’s inconceivable that an active member might find himself in a disciplinary counsel without having been warned many times in many ways that such might be coming. Someone who actively severs all ties and communication with the Church might be able to avoid learning of a disciplinary hearing but they would have to work hard at it (as with Tom Phillips).

I’m totally paranoid right now too, even though I’m sure it is completely irrational. My bishop made eye contact with me a few times in sacrament yesterday and I felt my heart start to pound and my face begin to flush. He knows my opinion on a few issues and I currently do not hold a temple recommend, but now I wish he didn’t know so much about how I feel. I wish I could trust people around me, but I’m learning after reading through these threads that you have to be very careful who you talk to about doubts/concerns/questions/etc. I know I haven’t done anything to warrant a “disciplinary council” but I totally feel paranoid and understand where you’re coming from mom3! P.S. Thanks for the laugh, that story was awesome 🙂
