I think he’s accurate, but I don’t even try and guess anymore where or if shifts will occur. The ones that seem vital to me most likely won’t shift. I expect it will be more of an unexpected change.

Maybe this is another take on “out of small things proceedeth that which is great.”
:think: Do most people living through a small shift even notice the shift or can people only point at the huge change long after the shift has occurred? Small shifts occur every single day. Maybe not shifts among the people that are in positions to make decisions or receive revelation for the church as a whole, but there are small shifts happening to individual church members every single day.
A grandchild is born that will not share the same world view as their grandparent. That’s a small shift. It happens every day. Someone’s close friend comes out as being attracted to the same sex. That’s a small shift. It happens every day. A seminary teacher is supportive of a student that expresses doubts. It happens every (week) day. These small shifts are occurring in the lives of the leaders as well.
When contemplating the small shifts I’m not looking for shifts in policy or culture. I think the shifts in policy and culture are the huge changes. The small shifts are occurring in the lives of the individual, in our lives. It’s like a butterfly effect that starts with us.
I’ve got to get around to reading this article.
