ParticipantDid “Praise to the Man” get sung in your ward/Stake this past Sunday March 24? March 26, 2019 at 11:16 am #235772nibbler
KeymasterI don’t think so (I was out of town) but I doubt it because it was sung in my ward on March 10th. March 26, 2019 at 11:40 am #235773DarkJedi
ParticipantNope. We had ward conference and two “Primary” songs (I am a Child of God and Teach Me to Walk in the Light). Was there some reason it was expected to be sung? It’s not Joseph’s birth or death day. March 26, 2019 at 1:27 pm #235774Minyan Man
ParticipantNot in our ward. Why do you ask? March 26, 2019 at 1:49 pm #235775nibbler

My guess is that it is one of his wedding anniversaries.

ParticipantSo they sang it in our ward, nothing else was in the topics related to him. Then I guess on a Reddit thread a bunch of wards in Utah did sing it. And the conjecture is that it was the anniversary of the Joseph’s Tar & Feathering. The Reddit scuttlebutt is that Salt Lake sent a request to have it sung. I was hoping to prove it out – one way or the other over here.
Thanks for input.

That’s quite the thing to celebrate. There’s suspiciously little info out there on why the mob tried to tar and feather Joseph Smith, with of course the Church stating something about “the Church is true, and they were haters, who felt threatened, because we are right.” But a couple of the sources I found said the original intent was to castrate Joseph for having intimate relations with 16 year-old Nancy Marinda Johnson, but the doc opted out last minute, and the mob tarred and feathered him instead. The same Nancy, JS would later marry.
Praise to… yeah…

KeymasterNope. The scuttlebutt is silly. There are enough wards in Utah that almost any hymn is going to be sung in a lot of them every week.

ParticipantWe did! But I didn’t hear a word about it, and I am in a position that I would hear about it. Then again, I did miss a bishopric meeting a week ago Sunday, and it could have been discussed then.
That all said, I think this is rumor and coincidence.

ParticipantWe didn’t. Our ward hymn is Nearer Our God to thee, a favorite of a bishopric member. It always makes me think of the sinking Titanic, I’m afraid, because they are said to have sung that. I don’t complain though as said bishopric member is a lynchpin of this ward and is a good guy otherwise… -
