Real Clear Religion article on Mormon Missions

I enjoyed this article. Just curious, those of you who have a missionary out right now, if your kid would have enjoyed this before the mission, do you see anything “wrong” with sending it to him/her now? I think it’s pretty positive and real, but it’s not The Ensign.

I think that it is a great piece. It is very realistic and faith promoting. I would not hesitate to send it to missionaries out in the field. They can relate to it and maybe it will make them feel a little more normal.

The article nicely details the realities of missionary life. I recognized and remembered nearly every word. I wish now that I had been mature enough then to truly appreciate what my mission gave me. I will have to be satisfied with appreciating it now.

A lot of wisdom in that article. My eldest son is not too far off mission age and I can see his efforts to prepare himself. I`m going to pass a copy to him to read. It may open his mind to greater possibilities that serving a mission can present to him than he may have so far considered.

Really enjoyed that. It’s about the realities of a mission that are often not talked about beforehand. Very inspiring.

What a great article and so true. It really made me reflect back to the challenges of my own mission.

I think the article is realistic. It does describe how a mission opens up your mind to the experiences of other people and does not really shelter you from people’s life circumstances. Often the biggest things you learn have to do with how to get along with someone different from yourself — but only on a personality basis.

I’m not in full agreement about the intolerance argument. That’s a mixed bag. Some people come home really committed and unfortunately, very judgmental about other who a) do not serve a mision b) do not live the commandments they way they they think they should and considering only the people who join the church as elect (which gets a little closer to “elite” than I like).

However, overall a good article.
