What is a bit ironic about Pres Hinkley saying that is that the term was originated, not by the fundamentalists, but by Mark E. Petersen in the 1940’s. The independents and a couple of groups agreed that the term was accurate and chose to adopt it.
The Church has also tried to get a trademark on the term “mormon” and has been, of course, denied.
I think we can all remember the hoopla over other Christian groups not wanting mormons to be considered “Christian”. That is, IMHO, pretty darn crude trying to tell others how they can/can’t label themselves.
Everyone will have to be their own judge as to whether or not Pres Hinkley was out of line saying that.
Ray, I think Pres Hinkley was a smart man and had to be aware of leaders of various groups, as well as individuals, claiming revelation. I could be wrong of course.
My opinion only ……
It’s amazing how well they live on, what secular society would consider, a modest income. Well dressed happy children, decent autos (nothing fancy), nice homes, great school, clean yards, productive gardens, good looking livestock, etc. ….. All this while taking the admonition to “avoid being indebted to the gentiles” very seriously. It can be done.
