I promised by DH that I would ask this question here. DH has Asperger’s Syndrome and often takes what people say literally. He has always struggled with what the term “still small voice” means. He asked what it meant during a Gospel Doctrine class, but the teacher did not answer his question.

So, can you help my DH? What does the term “still small voice” mean to you?

Your responses will be much appreciated.

I like what Jiminy Cricket says when Pinocchio asks:

    Pinocchio: What are conscience?

Jiminy Cricket: What are conscience! I’ll tell ya! A conscience is that still small voice that people won’t listen to. That’s just the trouble with the world today…

I like to also relate it to “the force” in Star Wars. In the end I think it mostly comes down to love – it’s the heart of your inner being that reminds you what the “right” thing to do is – the thing that will demonstrate the greater love.

It is also the voice of God.

I think of it as the feelings I feel when I am “still” – when I get rid of distractions and just feel and what comes to my mind when I contemplate all by myself and the thoughts that come out of the blue, out of context, quietly that are “good” thoughts.

I concur with my esteemed colleagues.
