Here’s a Deseret News (that’s sorta-official Church isn’t it?) article about a faithful, but over the top “free spirit” Mormon Sister and her tatoos:

And here is a blog about her:

    Enjoy 🙂

    Thanks, dash.

I love these sort of highlights of unorthodox members. I’ve said before that I think the “I’m a Mormon” campaign is as important for members (especially orthodox members) to see as it is for non-members.

I also spend some considerable time on her blog. Her tattoos do not define her message. She isn’t starting a campaign of “Let people with tattoos pray in GC.” Her messages are all about hope, faith, courage, revelation, and love (in short – the gospel). She just happens to have tattoos. I love this message that Al Fox is bringing. We do not need to be the same to be “one.”

I believe that the church is getting this message sloooooowwwwwlllllllyyyyyyy. In the comments of this article there are a few that take offence that she even suggests that there might be a problem with judgmentalism in the church. Thankfully most praised her. Even among the praise there were comments about her leaving behind her life that was represented by the tattoos and starting fresh. I think that is an improvement but slightly patronizing. We are all different and we all sin – some differences and some sins are easier to hide than others. I hope that we can accept others as people of great value and worth first and then work on getting to know each other from there. Respect doesn’t need to be earned, it should be understood that everyone deserves respect inherent in their status as a human being.
