I ordered this from the library last year. It was a real mine of information, and I was impressed by it. Is it true that the people who produced it got told off/kicked out?
Unfortunately this site doesn’t look at good as the print version, as the pictures and layout are not so well done_>

I don’t think so…I was young when it came out, but I seem to recall it having a pseudo-official imprimatur. Many of the contributors, if I recall correctly, are names we’d all recognize, Bushman, McConkie, etc.

Not sure what you mean. That just doesn’t describe the production or how it was used or viewed.
Could someone explain the differences and similarities between this book (or series of books) and the book Mormon Doctrine? From what I’ve seen “Mormon Doctrine” is a lot more doctrinaire, whereas the Enclyclopedia uses a broader brush and has a diversity of ideas in it. “Mormon Doctrine” is an encyclopedia of Bruce R. McConkie’s personal beliefs (at the time it was published). Because of the title of the book, and the fact that the author was a general authority, many assumed it spoke officially of Mormon doctrine. I suppose it did speak for a view of a large majority of Mormons from the 1950’s and 1960’s. Many dramatic changes have taken place since that time, so it is quite out of date (even offensive at times by modern standards).

And into the 70s and 80s. I have a copy of it that I bought in the late 70s or early 80s. It became known in some circles as the Gospel According to McConkie. It is a one volume book and I think the Encyclopedia of Mormonism is many volumes.
I wonder if in 10 or 20 years, the Encylclopedia of Mormonism will be just as inaccurate as how we view Mormon Doctrine now. Mormon Doctrine was very useful as a resource for people when it was first published, and before it become too problematic.
