The Second Comforter: Conversing with the Lord Through the Veil

    by Denver C. Snuffer, Jr.

I took a l-o-n-g time for me to read this. Sometimes I had to put it down for a month or two, to really ponder some comment or belief or idea. Out of all the concepts he discusses, I am only unsure about (or, just reserving judgment) on two of them.

If you’re not fully engaged in …uhn… …spiritual things(?)… , you may feel this is presumptuous and want to throw up. If OTOH you *are* into this theme, then the book is just amazing. He really ‘gets’ the whole gospel thing, IMO. We are individually responsible for our spiritual development, and have to approach ‘God’ as individuals, while as the same time benefiting from the institution and it’s rituals.

I kept thinking how interesting it was that certain concepts of life and/or the Gospel that I was proud of myself for having figured out on my own, he laid out beautifully and clearly. I was like “dang, that’s just what I would have said….”

Anyway, some love it, some hate it, myself, I enjoyed it.

That sounds like something interesting. I might have to add it to my list.

Is this book about the Calling in Election Made Sure?

No, it’s not. Are they directly related? I can’t really answer, and the book doesn’t address that, I don’t think.

Nevertheless, I’ll say that my understanding is that one can receive the “Calling and Election” without receiving the Second Comforter, but I’m not sure that the reverse is true.

I had always believed that second comforter / calling & election made sure were the same thing: you personally see the Savior, and He says you’re in! Or put another way, when you get to a certain point (think: Brother of Jared), the Savior can no longer hide his presence from you because your faith is so strong. I’m a bit skeptical of this for lots of reasons (even more skeptical of second anointings), but that’s how I’ve always heard it explained by CES types. Prof. George Pace at BYU also wrote a book on this subject and often preached about it in his religion classes. He was a very dynamic teacher who brought a great spirit of love and acceptance into his classes, and I enjoyed his book as well. But I’m still not sure about the whole concept. There are things I like about it, though.
