    A, erm that’s it.

I suspect more temples in Latin America and Africa are on their way.

Frankly I wonder if it’s more likely that men’s missionary service time will be reduced to 18 months. From what I can see, there are almost too many missionaries for some stakes and wards to handle, not too few. Reducing service time would for men slightly reduce the number of missionaries – if that truly is a problem – and would eliminate another inequality between the sexes.

About BYU, in my opinion the church education system helps keep the church strong and growing, for many reasons which I won’t go into here. I would love for another BYU to be opened somewhere. Maybe Europe, Mexico, or South America. I don’t think this is likely since operating a university is very expensive.

Having lived through it and serving an 18 month mission I highly doubt they will go back to that. The missionary department is super pleased that there are so many missionaries even though it appears to me that there isn’t enough for them to do and some areas seem to have more missionaries than they can use. It’s that whole “hasten the work” thing. If you read what Elder Evans, the big cheese in the missionary dept. says, there’s no way they’re considering having fewer missionaries. (He’s not my favorite guy, but that’s neither here nor there.) FWIW, there are some areas of the world where male missionaries are called for only 18 months because of required military service or other reasons. That was also one of the reasons given for the initial 18 month thing.

And I’d go for another BYU, too, perhaps on the east coast (maybe buying Southern Virgina U). It is expensive, and I know that’s the excuse given, but I really think the church can afford it.

There’s plenty of work for missionaries, they just have to know where to look.

Europe is extremely unlikely given the church’s attitude to sex, alcohol and gays.

BYU Jerusalem could become a serious prospect though.

BYU should concentrate on online courses, and distance learning IMHO.

The Church is working on an online program, especially for areas with few or no good educational options for poor members, that will include high school diploma completion and be accessed at the meetinghouses. Most people don’t know how innovative the Church has been in education for decades.

    I don’t have a timeline, but it’s a priority project.

I am delighted to hear that. Jews have always put a high emphasis and literacy, and we should too. It’s been to their advantage.

I agree. BYU was a pioneer in distance education and I took classes through BYU Distance Learning via correspondence before the internet was a “thing.” They offered, and still offer, high school level courses as well. They’re pretty lean on the online degree side, an area I would like to see improved/enhanced, but that’s for another thread.

Sounds good. I’m pleased to hear it.

I’ll avoid derailing this thread by making any further points about the cost of subsidising BYU.

For April 2014 General Conference, how would you order the following items from most likely to least likely to be announced:

    A. New temple in Utah

    B. Women can serve 24-month missions

    C. Women to be ordained to the priesthood

    D. Shortening the 3-hour block

    E. Elimination of the 1-year waiting period for temple sealings

    F. Renaming of the Priesthood Session to the General Men’s Meeting

    G. A reiteration of the 1970 FP Letter on tithing, of which most members are still unaware, 44 years later

    H. Opening a new BYU campus

    I would add:

I: A statement by President Monson that formalizes the Church Essay: “Race and the priesthood”

It has not been translated into any language yet.

How about this in the next GC?

“The restored church has always acknowledged the presence of

extraterrestrial life, but it was only after President Truman met with

EBEs that a line of communication was properly established. Several of the Quorum of the Twelve were present at that meeting. We would like to announce

that the Book of Mormon is now available in both Zeta Reticulan and

Pleidiean, and the start of our off earth missionary program. Due to the problems of FTL travel and time dilation, missionaries will serve a two

hundred year mission off earth. Presidents Obama and Putin will be making a joint statement about the extraterrestial presence on Earth shortly. And now, just behind that curtain over there, we have Elder S!”hzzpflam, one of the first ET baptisms, and now a missionary to Earth. Come

    forward Elder S!”hzzpflam.”

    Stunned silence, no clapping.

I can’t see us having much missionary success with either the Klingons or the Vulcans.

Vulcan: This testimony thing, can you explain it in logical terms please? And what do you mean by “know”?

Klingon: I liked the bit about smoting Laban’s head off but why did he need Heavenly Father to tell him to do so? Most of the rest of the Book of Mormon was dull apart from the battle scenes. I liked the bit where the Lamanites eat raw flesh and drink blood… And why didn’t Captain Moroni lead a suicide squad? What do you mean I can’t

    drink blood ale?
