White Shirts

Today a member of our Stake Presidency spoke, he was called recently and I had never met him before.

He was given the assignment this morning, so his talk was what most people would, just talked about a variety of different thoughts.

This is a story he told:

When I was first baptized I came to church for the first time I wore a blue shirt, and I looked around and everyone was wearing white shirts. I felt bad and thought that I should have worn my white shirt.

The next Sunday I wore my white shirt to church, and I looked around and everyone was wearing white shirts. I felt bad because it was so hard to see their differences.

Brothers and Sisters it is hard to be a member of this church.

So do you men wear white shirts to church every week? I do and especially when I’ m on assignment. So, do we do this out of tradition or respect or has it to do with fear. Right now I want to choose my battles and for me I think if I fight this battle my credibility might suffer and I can’t continue to fight the changes I would like to see.

I wear white every other week or so. Used to every week before my rebirth…

I wore a deep green shirt today. My Bishop told me I looked really good – but I think he was referring to my weight, not my shirt. I’m not sure, however.

I used to alternate white shirt with colored then I became part of the YM presidency and will occasionally need to fill in to pass sacrament so I regularly wear a white shirt now to be ready. I don’t have any issue with white or those who wear colored shirts but I believe there is valid symbolism and respect in wearing white.

I wear a gray shirt. I have white shirts but gray is my little act af rebellion against the cultural mores. I also have hair on my chinny chin chin.

I have to wear a white shirt often. We have a small ward, so we have a small Aaronic priesthood. I live in a small college town in northern Illinois.

Guidebook actually says white shirts or “normal” but not required. Also discourages Bishops from making those passing the sacrament “look alike”
