ParticipantYep the UK missed the memo on that, I know several stakes doing them up to a couple of years ago In my stake we still do a ‘dance festival’ which everyone loves even though the same ward wins each year!!

Participantjust to clarify I was not calling anyone out on this site! I was thinking of the general ‘grrr lets destroy the church brigade, that gets a bit too much sometimes
I world like to see the church change an improve in a few areas, but destroying something that could be a force for good.

ParticipantDBMormon – Do you have a powerpoint deck or something that you can share? brit-exmo
ParticipantI seem to recall hearing that Helping Hands was a reaction by the church around a threat to it’s charitable status Anyone hear of such a thing?

They technically have a little alcohol left.
I could never understand why members drank N/A but wouldn’t drink Shandy…

ParticipantMy opinion is that just on the family front this is a no-go, you don’t want to give your wife more ‘ammo’ to resent the church and your participation in it. If it was you alone, it would be a good calling, a chance to help influence the youth in a positive ‘non-religous-nutjob’ type way.

And if that’s true, when you say “you don’t know anything” aren’t you doing the same thing? Aren’t you establishing a position that says “there’s no way you can know, so don’t say ‘I know'”?
You make a fair point and you are right, its probably me just being mean and intolerant of their naivety, I want to say I expect more of a Stake Presidency and Bishopric, but that’s being mean too.
Most of the time I think I am past the angry phase (it’s been 10 years) but now and then it flares up.

Directness is great, it’s refreshing to have this sort of dialogue without people getting offended at a different view.

After the meeting my wise 85 year old Clerk took me to one side and said “You were loosing them in there. Save the fancy numbers for my reports; the branch council is their meeting, not your meeting, and they came to talk about their friends and neighbours. Not numbers and trend lines.”
I love this… And he was right, its all about the people and friendships.

ParticipantIn answer to the topic question, my thoughts are Yes. If someone is at a mental and / or physical state where they are no longer ‘with it’ then the only honest thing to do is step down, they could even use the ’emeritus’ status, it would show the church to have a pragmatic as opposed to dogmatic management style which would be refreshing.

ParticipantI often think about it, and my feeling is that if there is no life after death that is pretty awful I want to watch over my kids forever, and so the thought of not being aware of them, and them not being aware of me, is very hard for me.
Maybe this is one of the issues that I am happy to have the rose tinted spectacles on with.

ParticipantOne thing that gets me is the insistence in using ‘job titles’ – So I have seen my local Bishop insist people call him ‘Bishop’ during conversations, same goes for stake presidents insisting in people calling them President. IMHO anyone who has to insist on a badge is abusing their power. It says ‘i have a title’ and you don’t so you have to listen to me.
Why can’t people just communicate on an equal plane as humans.

ParticipantI remember a big thing that initially caused me to think the church possibly not inspired in all things was the perpetual education fund. For years I had been taught in church that we should stay out of debt, and avoid it except for house purchases. Then here is the church setting itself up as a loan company! They even charged interest and asked for members to donate to the initial capital.
What would happen if someone defaulted on the loan? Would the church send the baliffs round to turf someone out of their house, and take their possessions as repayment???
Thinking all these things through made me think the leadership had a case of ‘do as i say not as i do’
