But that’s kind of the problem for me. If the church really is everything it claims to be then surely it should be different to all the other churches.
If a prophet doesn’t actually act like a prophet or if a church said to be led by Christ doesn’t act like it one, then what conclusion should we reach?

Participant“There is a temptation for the writer or teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful.”…direct quote from President Packer. This is why we cannot blame the local leaders and membership.
This issue was created from the top down.
Period.

ParticipantThanks heber13. Just to be clear though, i do not blame or have any animosity towards my local leaders. They are simply doing what they were told, taught and trained to do.
This problem comes from the top…. over the past 40 years, the church leadership correlated the “truth” out of the church, and allowed concepts like the 14 Fundamentals of the Prophet to saturate the members and local leaders.
We can’t blame the local leaders and members for just being faithful to the truths they were taught and have come to believe.

ParticipantWhy will God’s one true church simply not apologize to the 1000s of people like me and Christy for accusing us of being Anti mormon and misled by the devil for speaking the truth? Maybe that should be part of the “growing up” process?
I blame the top leadership for allowing this to hapoen and get so out of hand.
Why can’t they simply apologize?
One talk by Urchtdorf is not going to cut it.
Baby steps. Sure. But it is not enough.
Their will be pain and casualties as the leadership attempt to dig their way out of this hole they have dug for themselves. .

ParticipantI agree Ray. And really, the history itself is not the problem or the issue, IMO. My issue is how the church has intentionally or unintentionally, misled and deceived is members about it’s history for the last 40 years.
It’s the perceived dishonesty and deception that is tearing the church apart right now.
People feel like the church has been dishonest and corrupt.
This is a step in the right direction. But there will be pain and casualties as the church goes about fixing their mistake of the last 40 years.
The church is in a no win situation, and they have only themselves to blame for it.

ParticipantRay, i appreciate your attempt to moderate fairly and eveningly. You have a difficult task. Well, this thread does not surprise me at all. It is what the faithful LDS members really believe and feel, in my experience.
RSbenson and Daddy etc are just being honest, and I appreciate that. Validates and reminds me why I have had to walk the path I am traveling. Thank you.

ParticipantI’m going to just ignore this thread. Ray. … you owe me one.

Participant1. I have peace. 2. I’ve reacquainted with many great friends from high school and the mission.
3. I reached out to my BIL who i hadn’t spoken to in 15 years. Found out he has formally left the church.
4. Formed many great friendships and community that i would never have before the faith crisis.
Basically. … the positive for me is the friendships and relationships that I’ve built, repaired and renewed over the past 5 years.

ParticipantThe concept that the church has a monopoly on the “one true pathway” is the biggest stumbling block holding back the church today. I believe if the church could get away from this ONE concept, they would grow in leaps and bounds. I believe people would flock to church.

ParticipantOld-Timer wrote:President Uchtdorf has said from the General Conference pulpit that church leaders have made mistakes in the past, and I am 100% certain that he would say the same thing about himself and our current leaders. The recent official statement from the Church about the Priesthood ban also says clearly that former leaders have made mistakes. I support and sustain them as prophets, seers and revelators, but they absolutely do make mistakes.
I will trust President Uchtdorf and the current Church leadership on this one. If anyone disagrees with them, feel free to say so.
Well said.
Yep. The mormon people refuse to listen to their own prophets.
