If you want to stay active in the church for whatever reason, my advice is to “fuhgeddaboutit” and discuss something else.

I thought this was a safe place to discuss our concerns. This happens to be one of my BIG concerns…so why go discuss something else?

I believe women have something equal to priesthood…motherhood and womanhood. Perhaps as we allow the Savior to be manifest in our lives the need and ability to give blessings become available to us. Women are equal to men and priesthood in every respect…maybe even better.

Men have fatherhood and manhood…those two are equivalents to motherhood and womanhood.

Women are NOT maybe even better than men. That is an insult to men. The scriptures teach that ALL are alike to God, MALE AND FEMALE:

“…he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.” 2 Nephi 26:33

Does anyone know how a woman is given this authority to officiate in temple ordinances in the initiatory? Does the Temple President lay his hands on her head to give her this authority? If so, what verbage does he use to state this?

I appreciate all the responses but I’m still in the dark how an ordinance can be performed without the performer holding the priesthood. Am I just dense? 😳

It is confusing Daisy, and it is kind of playing with words. Yes, women are given the priesthood to exercise in that setting, the difference is they are not authorized to exercise it anywhere else. If that makes sense. If they were considered a general priesthood holder they would be able to exercise it outside of that specific function.

Again, my personal views and understanding only.

It seems to me that if this were the case, there seems to be some FEAR of saying or admitting that women hold and exercise the priesthood in the temple to perform an ordinance. Why would that be so? Because we aren’t supposed to talk about it? And what priesthood are these women given? Aaronic? Melchezidek?

The question for me probabaly going to be is how to learn to live within the church and Utah Culture and not drive myself crazy.

Oh…I can so relate to this! That is the question for me as well. I think it’s wonderful you have a loving and supportive spouse. I have the same. We are able to discuss all these topics openly and freely and that makes all the difference.

And then there is the other part of me the feels deeply betrayed by this organization that I devoted so much to — the one that was suppose to be there to help me in my darkest of days. Instead, I felt very abandoned and shunned and most of all forgotten. So. Here I am…..a recovering apostate. :D Someone who loves this gospel and one who wants to live at peace with it too. Looking forward to getting to know you as I share parts of me with you and hopefully as you share your wisdom with me.Poppy

I hope you have listened to the podcast #22 on the home page here by J. Bonner Ritchie entitled Organizations and Individuals. I found that to be so helpful in my expectations of the church as an organization and I think it will be helpful for you, too. I am learning to find happiness through lowered expectations.

I’m so sorry you feel very abandoned and shunned and forgotten. I am sure you have found support and great helps here as I have. This is a good place to be as we sort it all out. I hope you will see in me a person who is there for you in your darkest days.

I don’t know much about the history of PBs, but I have recently learned something interesting about them. As a gift for my husband, I ordered some of my husband’s ancestors’ PBs from the Church History Department. While looking up their names on an index at the family history library, I discovered that many of his early church ancestors had more than one PB given to them throughout their lives. I have obtained copies of them. I found that interesting, since I only get ONE. LOL I wonder, though, if I went to my Stake Patriarch and asked for another, if he’d give me one? 😆

Join the club. I leave church disgusted quite often. LOL But seriously, we have to laugh or we’d DIE, right?

The loud counselor was totally out of line. I would talk to him privately and tell him how his behaviro made you feel. That’s easier said than done, but is what the scriptures advise us to do if someone offends us. I recently did this and all turned out well. I think we are actually closer now than before.

We have never been encouraged to gay bash nor have we been told not to plan our own families in General Conference. Imperfect people have their opinions at church and it’s part of the process for all of us to learn and grow.

I would have left that class quite disgusted as well. Because I have such a loving and understanding Bishop, I would go to him and express these concerns. Hopefully your Bishop is loving and understanding as well.

In this specific case women are given the authorization and even authority to perform this ordinance. It can be said that they don’t hold the priesthood, but they do act as an agent through which the priesthood functions.

This is exactly the answer that confuses me. Joseph Smith said, “Wherever the ordinances of the Gospel are administered, there is the Priesthood.”

It seems to me that women would HAVE to be given the priesthood to perform that ordinance. Otherwise, wouldn’t I want to go to the other side of the temple and have to done by a man, who has the priesthood? Isn’t the very definition of the priesthood the authority of God given to man?

What I really want to know is how it is possible for a woman to be given the authority but somehow that authority isn’t the priesthood? :?
