Participantcwald… I just wanted you (and any of your leaders/family reading this) to know I love you and I love this forum. I may not participate here much these days, but I still read it often and enjoy all of your wisdom. Were it not for this forum, the incredible work and compassion of John Dehlin (love those podcasts!) and great people such as you cwald and others… were it not for these avenues of support and validation, I would have surely left the church years ago. Instead I am still able to attend and contribute. My ability to find a “middle way” approach is the only thing keeping me in the church. If this approach is no longer welcomed there, then my days are surely numbered!
I just wanted you all to know how thankful I am for stayLDS, NOM, Mormon Stories, Mormon Expressions, and everyone who had uplifted and inspired me during my journey of growth and discovery!
love,

ParticipantOverall… not a bad conference. Lots of talks about serving others. Yeah! I liked that. Ballard’s talk was excellent and I look forward to re-reading it. Simplifying the gospel to the basic principles of love of God and neighbor. Exactly the kind of talk I was hoping to hear. I also loved Lynn G Robbins. I loved his comments on the greater importance of “being”, not just “doing”. I am also impressed he was able to pull off giving some really great parenting advice without sounding condescending or offending parents.
There was still quite a list of things that bothered me a bit, but I am trying not too focus on and over-think those comments. I am happy with where I am heading and I refuse to let a bunch of old men guilt me into thinking I am on the wrong path. Different roads can still take me in the right direction, for me!

His example is from the movie “127 Hours” – well, actually, probably the book, since the movie is R-rated. (Everyone here might want to take that reference as being about the movie and implicit permission to watch R-rated movies.😆 😈 )I just watched that movie last night! It was good. I too wondered if his telling of the Aron Ralston story would make members want to see the film.

ParticipantI did not enjoy most of today’s conference. Many of the messages made me sad. I will not elaborate. I will say however that I really appreciated Ballard’s talk. It was a true Christ-like talk, and I was glad to see conference end on a good note! flower
ParticipantEnoch, I just now read this thread and I enjoyed your thoughts. I LOVE the symbolism of Jesus, and I LOVE the example of Jesus. I am proud that our church is named after him, I just wish that we as a church would remember what he stood for. I fear we are losing site of that. The Gospel of Christ was not about power, dogma or fancy temples… it was simply about love. As far as the need to pay for our sins… the way I see it life is an experience, not a test. You cannot fail and there is no punishment but sin will slow your growth, making it harder to ultimately discover the god that is in you. Sin will distance you from knowing your true self. So I guess the only payment we need to make is to have more experience, until we finally get it! (I really don’t know what the hell I am talking about, but it sounds good!)

Participantcwald… you handled this well. You are a good dad! I have always loved the smell of coffee, but hate the taste. I wouldn’t mind a french vanilla cappuccino or something along those lines. I really love tea, and find it to be the most healthy route for an energy boost. I mostly just drink water, and I avoid energy drinks and all soda in general.

ParticipantTom – Your UU congregation sounds wonderful! flower
ParticipantWelcome! I really enjoy your insights over at NOM and I am thrilled to have you posting over here now as well.
 flower
ParticipantFalcosp, I am so happy to have you over here as well as at NOM. I feel we are kindred spirits. I too am struggling with finding a way to stay. Right now I feel that I have no choice. I have too much to lose. I stay because I love my family and I don’t want to hurt them, but I also want to find a way to be happy there. I am a work in progress for sure.
This is a great forum and again I am glad you are here!

ParticipantSounds very nice! I have been interested in experiencing church services of other faiths, but my husband will not support this. I thought maybe it could be a fun tradition to find a different churches to attend while we were on vacation. We travel a lot and usually don’t attend any services while away. We love to travel and experience different cultures and people, why not different faiths too? flower
ParticipantGreat post… Thanks for bumping it! Seems that I haven’t quite made it through “spiritual puberty” just yet. I’ll get there eventually. flower
ParticipantAwesome update about tattoo lady! Almost makes me want to attend more just so I can be an advocate and voice for those who do not yet have the courage to speak up when needed. You rock! ParticipantFunny you bring this up because I was just told yesterday for about the 20th time this year alone by well meaning TBMs that “people aren’t perfect, but the Church is.” I too HATE this saying. It seems to be the standard saying when ignorant or fearful members don’t know how to otherwise defend the Church. I could almost agree with it if by “church” it was meant “The Gospel of Christ” but that is just not what it is. Like it or not the Church isits people, its leaders, its prophets, its past, its present and its DOCTRINE. All of which are far from perfect. flower
Participantcwald wrote:I like the thought about the gay/celibate GA. Why not?
I always secretly thought that Sheri Dew was in the closet. It would be the coolest thing ever if someone like her “came out”. I also think that it would be good for the church… showing that it was possible to be gay and actively Mormon with leadership.
(mods, feel free to delete this post if I crossed a line concerning Sis Dew’s sexuality!

Participantcwald wrote:SWK put his thumb down. Why didn’t Monson?
SWK may have put his thumb down privately to the Q15, but NEVER publicly. If he had then this talk may have never been repeated.
cwald wrote:I’m afraid this battle has been lost for another generation my friend. Perhaps our children will fight it another day?
You bet they will! Kids today are socially aware, opinionated and have access to a wealth of information and truth. They are also free spirits who pride themselves on individuality… and they are definitely NOT SHEEP. They will not stand for this kind of BS thinking. Things WILL CHANGE! (I’m just not sure I can wait the 2 generations it will take to get all the Borgs out of leadership)
