I know Mark Hofmann said he was trying to commit suicide, but police evidence indicates otherwise. I’m working on a new interview with Brent Ashworth, and he cites police evidence that Mark bumped the gear shift while trying to move the bomb into the back seat. Apparently evidence is pretty clear Mark accidentally set off the bomb. Brent said it would have required remorse for Mark to commit suicide, and Mark has none.

I know the Fundamentalists claim that Jesus was Married, but in my opinion, it is poorly sourced and there are a lot of leaps of logic to get there. I spoke with Anne Wilde who was a plural wife of Ogden Kraut who wrote “Jesus Was Married.” I spoke to her and an apostle for a polygamist group (Christ’s Church) for the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book. Anne edited and typed the book. See https://gospeltangents.com/2019/11/making-case-jesus-married/

She does state that shortly after the publication of Ogden Kraut’s “Jesus Was Married,” that she gave a copy to Joseph Fielding Smith, who was Pres of the Q12 in 1969. She says that Smith whole-heartedly accepted the premise of the book and claims the wedding at Cana was the wedding of Jesus. It’s an interesting speculation, but clearly there is not enough evidence. I think it was clearly a belief among the early Q12, but I think the current Q12 would have no official position on the matter, which I believe is the Church’s official position as well.

This is on my (long) list of books to read. It sounds very interesting!

I have the same problem. I purposely avoid reading comment sections in newspapers because it is such a hate-fest. I think avoidance is the best you can do. There was an interesting post at W&T on this phenomenon: https://wheatandtares.org/2018/01/19/how-to-deal-with-umm-a-holes/

I remember when my kids would be told to apologize to a sibling. They would give this flippant, “sorry.”

    No sincerity or ownership.

I understand what you are saying and agree to a large part. On the other hand, our current POTUS never learned that skill. In other words, even if “sorry” is not sincere, it’s still better to teach your kids than not.

I know Rock, but he relies on the RLDS for his sources that Joseph wasn’t a polygamist. While I know it is appealing, Rock’s just plain wrong on this topic. There’s simply too much evidence. Here’s my interview where Brian Hales refutes Rock’s points.

Yes, we talked about that in our interview. Jerald really took Ed Decker to town after the screening. They were a bit perplexed!

I can see how Uchtdorf is “uniquely qualified” to lead Europe since he is a European.

I wonder about one thing though. For those who think Uchtdorf was “too progressive,” if Nelson had a concern about that, would he put Uchtdorf in charge of Correlation? I’ve heard rumors that the Brethren were upset about Uchtdorf’s talk admitted that leaders can be wrong sometimes. My question is this: for those who think Nelson doesn’t like to be questioned, why put Uchtdorf in charge of Correlation if he is likely to spread progressivism into the curriculum? If Nelson is trying to lesson Uchtdorf’s influence, is putting him in charge of correlation the answer to that concern or is it overblown?

I found it funny that the anti-Mormons hated it, while the pro-Mormons loved it. One of the publishers made a facebook post to the effect of “hell hath frozen over.” 😆

That’s news to me, but I’d say that is major admission. I may have to get in touch with the authors!

I talked to Paul Reeve, and he was the source for the Race Essay, although it was HEAVILY edited by the brethren. The brethren don’t want to throw prophets under the bus, and the fact that they sort of threw Brigham under the bus was a major concession. Still, the essay equivocates a lot more than Paul Reeve would have if he had written the essay. I questioned him on whether the essay went too far, or not far enough. I think most would say not far enough, but it was pretty groundbreaking what the essay admits. Here’s the whole interview if you would like to hear Paul’s perspective on it: https://gospeltangents.com/2017/02/27/paul-reeve-wrote-the-race-essay/ (We hit a few other hot-button topics as well.)

As far as biblical precedent for anointing with oil, there was a tv show called “the Bible”, narrated by the woman from Touched by an Angel. Anyway, the episode when Samuel anointed Saul, he poured oil all over his face. It was definitely not what LDS do, but it demonstrated anointing with oil from a biblical precedent.

I heard that if people keep a gratitude diary and spend time everyday thinking about what you are grateful for, it makes you a happier person.
