I do know that a website (tolerance.com something like that) asked people to pray about what God wanted on a particular controversial issue. A fair number of them felt like God had answered their prayer confirming their earlier stance on the issue. Not all received answers … but nobody received an answer that contradicted their earlier position. God within? Maybe! ;)

Someone raised a similar question on the Thoughtful Faith FB group recently. How often has the spirit revealed truth to you that was contrary to what do already believed, or wanted to believe. Most people said their answers did not contradict their existing position.

I know I moved across the country because I felt like the spirit confirmed my decision to move. In retrospect, I don’t feel it was a traditionally inspired decision as it has led me down a strange path. But from the perspective of being inspired by the god within…I feel like it was inspired.

It appears that the counsel regarding mild barley drinks and meat being used sparingly carry the same weight in section 89. So how about this: I challenge anyone who justifies drinking beer to also abstain from eating meat unless it’s winter or there’s a famine. 🙂

I guess since my wife & I have cut meat down to a monthly treat, or to the times we are guests in someone’s home, we should start applying the same frequency and rules to mild drinks.

I am not promoting the drink, but beer is mild when comparing it to hard alcohol.

The WoW is not nearly as clear and straight forward as I once thought. I also think there is far too much emphasis on the don’t list, as opposed to the do list. Considering how many verses are dedicated to each.

I kind of think that anytime we are involved in good things we should get good feelings. Giving blessings is how we serve with the priesthood so out makes sense that we would feel good.

I also think there is a power in group unity that combined with things of sentimental value can make us feel good. Think of singing a national anthem as a group. Or participating in a team activity.

I really don’t grasp the concept of the spirit. I believe in it’s power. I think I have felt it in times past but there are plenty of times where I think I can attribute that feeling to sentimental value or group participation.

I’ve been making iced redbush tea this week as my main drink. And I’ve given up soda. I have to say I feel amazing after just a few days.

Iced herbal teas FTW. I have a selection of fruity herbal teas that make great iced drinks. In fact they are better cold than hot.

Welcome and thank you for sharing your story. I always find it interesting how complex this journey can be. Reading other people’s stories, like yours, helps me to value the differences both in our own community and the greater church community.

I believe the oral cancer issues are common with all hot drinks, even hit water. Hot liquids burn and that damaged tissue becomes susceptible to cancer.

Maybe Joseph Smith was on to something…

    Anyone tried Yerba Matè??

My brother is in NYC at the moment, and its what the ‘hipsters’ are drinking aparently…

I have been drinking Yerba lately, I find it really nice brewed with a fruity tea, and real nice when this combo is iced.

It does have some caffeine in it, my brand had about 2/3 what a coffee would, but diluting it as described above weakens it. Unlike coffee it is an alkaline which is good for you and Is packed with lots of vitamins and minerals. I think the compatibility of this with the WOW depends on your personal view of caffeine. I figure this is a way better option to drink cold than soda, despite whether that soda has caffeine or not.

I would like to build on these last comments and say that, to me, sustaining means you aren’t undermining them by trying to persuade others to think/talk bad about them. And that you are not trying to actively work against their sincere efforts.

I think the church is just looking to avoid uprisings at the local level.

I agree that you can’t mock someone’s spiritual experiences/stories, but if someone can’t source their story any closer than knowing the individual involved then I take it with a good dose of skepticism and put very little value on the story. The simple facts (like the likely possibility outlined earlier) just become too convoluted through the telephone game.

Does anyone think there might be a correlation between accepting these kinds of stories at face value (as well as other gospel mythology) and the size of the impact when/if a faith crisis hits. It seems a good bit of critical thinking could be great preventive medicine.

The bigger the bubble, the more the pop will hurt. Seems better to have the bubble of faith promoting rumors burst than a bigger bubble built on complex layers mythology.

I am a fan of ginger beer and birch beer.

As for tea, I drink loss of Roobois blends and Yerba Mate. For the Yerba, I like the earthy taste. There are lots of nutrients in it. I will sometime blend in a fruity tea or a bit of Agave to sweeten it up.

I also have some Samoan cocoa for special occasions.

Re yerba mate. I’ve always found it a strange drink particularly if prepared traditionally with the tiny cup, metal straw and virtually no fluid. And often shared like a joint.

It’s probably never mentioned because los general authorities yanquis have never heard of it.

It is however very addictive (more than coffee) and very high in caffeine.

I just brew mine up like regular tea. Yeah, it has caffeine, but mine says it has 2/3 the caffeine of an equal serving of coffee. From what I understand it doesn’t get you wired like coffee does and I don’t get jitters our headaches when I choose a roobois or other tea instead.

The church’s recent statement on caffeine has made their choice of what’s restricted seem even more arbitrary, so I live the letter of their law along the ‘don’t list’ and try to live the spirit of the law as far as the healthy living or the ‘do list’ goes.

I believe that what we put in our body multiple times a day (meals) have a far greater impact to our physical selves than an infrequent beverage. I am not sure how all this relates to the spiritual side, but that it’s something I struggle with on multiple facets.

I feel like the church’s attitudes towards sex and especially masturbation can take natural instincts or impulses and turn them into chronic problems. Nothing fuels curiosity like prohibition and taboo. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the actual ‘problems’ with porn in the church have increased guilt and thus lead to an increase in problems. No science to back that up, it is just my personal thoughts.

As such, the addiction may be easier to overcome by loosening up on traditional LDS views and continuing to work with a non LDS therapist.

Again, I am no expert, but it makes sense to my confused mind.
