As the mother of a son who has autism and moderate mental retardation, I find this extremely sad.

off topic, but I served a mission in the NY NY mission in 1989-91. I spent a couple of months in Rego Park, and had a good friend named Herman Orellana who was BP in Queens for awhile. Any chance we have crossed paths?
We didn’t cross paths since DH and I moved from Queens to SLC in 1978. We lived in SLC from 1978-1982. We’re now in the SF Bay Area.
We were quite active in the Rego Park Ward from 1972 to 1978. We have very fond memories.

Participant“Where have all the flowers gone ….” Sorry, that song came to mind for some reason. “I am woman, hear me roar … in numbers to big to ignore ….”
Sorry, again.
Yes, indeed, I am most definitely FEMALE.
🙂 I tend to just lurk here at StayLDS. I’ve been posting on another message board since I’m going through a rough time right now regarding the church.

I viewed the video at lds.org. As of 2:00 p.m. PDT, the audio-video has not been edited.

I’m not sure it’s possible to cover everything possible in a talk – and I hope we don’t criticize a talk for not meeting ALL of our own expectations (wanting Pres. Monson to include absolutely everyone possible) when talking about something that did address SO MANY of our expectations.
Thank you, Ray, for putting into words what I was thinking about President Monson’s talk. I felt myself moved to tears several times as I listened to him speak. He truly loves

no hopeof eternal family at all… I know my belief is contrary to what has been taught in the Church about eternal families, but I just cannot accept what you wrote. I believe there is ALWAYS hope, no matter what your religious affiliation. I choose to believe in a loving Heavenly Father who will not separate loved ones. But that’s just my opinion for what it’s worth.

ParticipantI appreciate all of the feedback to my OP. I am assuming that the potluck dinner and bunco night will be a one time ward activity. Hopefully no money will be involved. Anyway, DH and I have decided not to attend this activity. We would have preferred an activity like Karaoke night or charades. I read where one ward had as an activity LDS Hymnal Karaoke. Now that would be interesting.

But DH and I have no say in what the ward activity committee chooses. So it is what it is.

^ That’s a source that I Like. It’s free. Some of the books are better in published paper form though. Some of the digital versions are text-only and lose something (I think) when they don’t have the diagrams or pictures.
Excellent! Thank you for the link.

ParticipantWhat I have been pondering recently is where is “Jesus Christ” in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? So much praise is given to Joseph Smith. What about Jesus Christ? I do not mean to offend anyone, but I would think people who know very little about the LDS Church would think the members worship Joseph Smith, not Jesus Christ. I think all the focus on Joseph Smith is what leads people to question whether or not Mormons are “Christians.” Joseph Smith is reported as saying:
“I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam… Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.” (History of The Church 6:408–409.) These statements reported to have been made by Joseph Smith disturb me. I would agree that “This attitude strikes some as boastful, and unbecoming a prophet.”
As for me and my house, we worship and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Very true, Ray. The Ninth Article of Faith states:
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.Kalola
ParticipantSomething to remember … the Eleventh Article of Faith states: We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.I realize I am veering away from the original topic, but there are times I read something and start wondering if some members of the Church believe that they are somewhat “superior” to members of other religions. This morning I read these statements of Elder Neil L. Andersen Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:
Quote:We must remember, my dear brothers and sisters, who we are and what we have in our hands. We are not alone in our desire to do good; there are wonderful people of many faiths and beliefs.
We are not alone in praying to our Heavenly Father or in receiving answers to our prayers; our Father loves all of His children.
We are not alone in sacrificing for a greater cause; there are others who are unselfish.
Others share our faith in Christ. There are loyal and decent fathers and mothers in every land who love each other and love their children. There is much we can learn from the good people all around us.
***
Our knowledge of the divine mission of the Church should not bring feelings of superiority or arrogance but should take us to our knees, pleading for the Lord’s help that we might be what we should be.
I did some research on Joseph Smith and the Presbyterian religion and found the following:
Joseph Smith History, Chapter 1:7-107 I was at this time in my fifteenth year. My father’s family was proselyted to the Presbyterian faith, and four of them joined that church, namely, my mother, Lucy; my brothers Hyrum and Samuel Harrison; and my sister Sophronia.
8 During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious reflection and great uneasiness; but though my feelings were deep and often poignant, still I kept myself aloof from all these parties, though I attended their several meetings as often as occasion would permit.
In process of timemy mind became somewhat partial to theMethodistsect , and I felt some desire to be united with them; but so great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations, that it was impossible for a person young as I was, and so unacquainted with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion who was right and who was wrong. 9 My mind at times was greatly excited, the cry and tumult were so great and incessant. The Presbyterians were most decided against the Baptists and Methodists, and used all the powers of both reason and sophistry to prove their errors, or, at least, to make the people think they were in error. On the other hand, the Baptists and Methodists in their turn were equally zealous in endeavoring to establish their own tenets and disprove all others.
10 In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it?
Note that Joseph Smith became “somewhat partial to the
Methodistsect.” Blessings to each of you.

ParticipantI will admit I cringed when I read the terms “false churches” and “false religions.” Quote:There is a scripture that says that the elect of God will hear and follow his voice implying that people who don’t join the church aren’t the elect of God. However, if God is testifying of the truth to people in false religions and the people in false religions follow the truth that they have, then why would they reject more of the truth? It would almost be like God is toying with these people.
Which scripture are you referring to? I doubt that “God is toying with these people.”
I would write more, but I fear I’d come off sounding way too judgmental about which church has the “truth” and “feeling the spirit.”
