ParticipantOkay … I thought I could keep my opinions to myself, but … here goes … How many of you who have responded thus far can honestly say you don’t mind the smell of pot? How many of you would be OK with your children smoking pot? How many of you would smoke it? Would you really want to be around people smoking it? Oh, yeah, that’s right … perhaps you can get a better high from secondhand pot smoke than cigarette smoke. Oy!!!
I admit, I’m surprised that so far most of the comments are in favor of legalizing marijuana. I don’t understand the cavalier attitude towards legalization. Or am I misinterpreting what I’ve been reading?
I, personally, do not want to see marijuana legalized. Do we really need a bunch of stoners driving around? Haven’t we seen enough tragic accidents as a result of drunk driving? Why on earth would anyone want to cause more harm to innocent people?
“Hey, babe, how about some weed?” “Man, this really makes me mellow.” “Um … where did we leave the baby?” “Oh, yeah … What? We don’t have a baby? Are you sure?”
Am I being ridiculous? I don’t think so. I am opposed to anything that causes a person to lose all sense of reality and morality. The movie “Wild In The Streets” comes to mind. (If you are not familiar with the movie … as a friend of mine would say, “Google it!”)
And, yes, I tried pot in my teen years. I absolutely did not like the high, light-headed feeling it gave me. And, yes, I did drink alcohol in my teen years. Puking on the sidewalk … now that was attractive.
Anyone remember the incident recently where a mother let a female friend blow pot smoke in her young son’s mouth? The son has Down Syndrome. He started choking and crying and his mom told him to stop crying. This mom and her friend thought they were being funny. They are both serving time in prison. Now that’s justice! Here’s a link to a news report:
http://www.nbc-2.com/Articles/readarticle.asp?articleid=29109&z=3 Please think twice when it comes to legalizing marijuana.
It’s not harmless. It most certainly harms innocent men, women and children. Let’s see … I just brought up the WoW in another post. One of the responses mentioned NO alcohol, NO tobacco, NO coffee, NO tea. But YES to pot?????
😯 I could go on and on, but I’ll only raise my blood pressure.

Participantmormonheretic wrote:Malachi chapter 3 talks about tithing, so you might want to read the whole chapter. As for spiritual benefits of tithing, in verse 10 the Lord says,
“prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that [there shall] not [be room] enough [to receive it].”Of course, the next verse seems to talk more about “physical” blessings, but verse 10 can be interpreted as a spiritual blessing, and ” [there shall] not [be room] enough [to receive it].”
D&C 64: 23, Behold, now it is called today until the coming of the Son of Man, and verily it is a day of sacrifice, and a day for the tithing of my people; for
he that is tithed shall not be burned at his coming. Some LDS people call tithing “fire insurance.” Not being burned at Jesus 2nd Coming can be considered a spiritual blessing, I think.

As for the WoW, you’re probably aware of the physical blessings of “run and not be weary” etc, but there are a few spiritual blessings too. Section 89, Verse 19 says,
“And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;”I think these treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures should be considered spiritual insights and blessings. Thank you for the scripture references. I had forgotten D&C Section 89, Verse 19.

Bless you.
Ray, I will admit that I am quite rebellious, so perhaps I am being “stubborn.”
I was brought up in the Lutheran church where you were not required to tithe nor were you required to adhere to anything akin to the WoW. So tithing and the WoW are sticking points with me. What are the “spiritual” benefits of tithing and observing the WoW?
All of the responses I have received to my OP have given me much to ponder.
Thank you for helping me.

ParticipantRay – Thank you for your insights. I will be reading your blog entries on the topic. Kalola

I also hope you continue to check out my personal blog. I really like your contributions there.
Oh, and if I can arrange a job here, feel free to move to my ward.
I guarantee you and your unique scent would be welcome. Was it President Kimball who made a comment once that he welcomed the smell of cigarette smoke at church?
I want to thank each of you for your kind words.

ParticipantThank you for your responses. I always thought it was odd that members said “The Church is
true.” I doubt anyone would ever say “The Church is false.” So it’s not a true/false mind-think. Kalola

I also would celebrate having you in my ward.

Papa D!! Now I know I was inspired to join StayLDS.

If you like socializing with LDS women (or others members), your personal beliefs match up pretty good with the LDS Church, you have family that are LDS,
why not be a member? It would be great to hear more about your story, if you are comfortable sharing more. I just read through the very helpful thread “Decisions” by seedtender. I would not pass the interview for re-baptism because I would, in all honesty, respond “No” to some questions. I have some “issues” I have to work through.
I so much appreciated your statement (in the “Decisions” thread) that
“You don’t have to believe it all to participate or enjoy.”I have been told by some members that my “participation” would be extremely limited. What would frustrate me the most is not being permitted to share my thoughts in meetings (Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society). I’m not one to create controversy, but I’m also not one to just nod and say yes at the appropriate time. I like to encourage people to think about a topic or to share their interpretation of a scripture. I am so thankful that I have found StayLDS (by way of NOM). I am also extremely thankful for my supportive DH who helps answer my many questions. We recently had an enlightening discussion of 1 Corinthians 7. I highly recommend reading it.
As a bit of background, I was christened in the Lutheran church. I was active in the Lutheran church until my mid-teens. My DH introduced me to the LDS church. He baptized me before we married. No one on my side of the family is, or ever has been, LDS. DH and I had our names removed from the Church membership rolls while we lived in SLC. DH was rebaptized several years ago. I have more to share, but this is a start.

ParticipantFinancially, things are quite stressful for my DH and I right now. We are buried in a mountain of debt and are trying to avoid having to file for bankruptcy. We incurred the debt when we had the cushion of equity in our home, but since the value of our home has plummeted, well … we’re sitting on a concrete bench. This coming Friday, we will be having a “State of the Firm” presentation. I’m hoping some of my fears will be calmed.
