I actually see this more as a move by the church to begin getting out of the marriage business because if we’re not doing weddings we’ll never be able to be “forced” to do gay marriages (which I don’t believe is really on anybody’s agenda anyway). I think eventually in the not too distant future the church will only perform sealings and weddings will be done by civil authorities. “Religious liberty” problem solved (and certain GAs will have to find another bandwagon).

Duh. That hadn’t even occurred to me. I bet anything that’s the reason why.

I think most of us do exactly what OON suggests and mentally compress that timeline. The aforementioned muddiness doesn’t help us not do that. Maybe not on exactly the same scale as “What!? Joseph was a polygamist!?” but nonetheless something that most have believed all their lives and have been taught in Primary and SS (and likely even seminary).

I can’t remember where I picked up that idea. I’ve just always been told that the sky became like night in the Holy Land, even though it was mid-day, and that in the New World, the darkness lasted for three days and was followed by Christ’s appearance. And of course, I didn’t bother to question it.

Thank you guys so much! I’ve got to admit that I have a really hard time reading the Book of Mormon, and what you both pointed out was something I’ve never noticed.

The following is a relevant quote that has been discussed here in the past:

    Quote:

We are like sailors who must rebuild their ship on the open sea, never able to dismantle it in dry-dock and to reconstruct it there out of the best materials. Where a beam is taken away a new one must at once be put there, and for this the rest of the ship is used as support. In this way, by using the old beams and driftwood the ship can be shaped entirely anew, but only by gradual reconstruction.

    I love that!

Sometimes broken pieces are just broken pieces.

I am solidly reconstructing but at a place where it’s looking pretty good. From the pile of rubble that was my faith I reused some in my new faith. There are some new parts that weren’t part of the rubble. There are parts of the rubble I haven’t figured out yet – will they fit or not? There are still other parts that will always remain on the pile, there is no use for them in the new faith. As Nibbler says, sometimes broken pieces are just broken pieces.

That’s pretty much where I am, too. The deconstruction phase was frightening and sometimes it still is, but I feel like I am mostly in the reconstructing phase and feelings pretty good about how it’s going. I really appreciate this book recommendation. It sounds like it would be pretty useful.

It seems to me, more and more all the time, that a temple recommend is being required for all sorts of things other than admission to the temple. I would even consider letting mine lapse, except that I probably wouldn’t be able to continue in my calling at the jail. I think of it as my jail recommend. How crazy is that?

Just curious. Could you continue to provide the service that you provide at the jail if you didn’t have the calling?

Hi, Nibbler. I misread your question the first time around. For some reason, I thought you were asking if I could continue to provide the service without a temple recommend (yeah, I know… I know you didn’t say that at all.) The answer is still, “probably not.” I think you have to be a part of some organization or other to be involved like that, and here in Salt Lake, the LDS Church is definitely the largest organization providing spiritual support for the inmates.

It’s hard to recall all the talks and they haven’t posted a listing yet but from memory.

    Saturday morning: Gong, Stevenson, Uchtdorf

Sunday morning: All talks except Nelson’s

    It’s a good start.

Yes, it’s definitely a good start. Thank you. Has Elder Holland spoken yet?

I’m not sure, but I suspect I might end up being released. Not willing to chance it.

I recorded Conference this year and haven’t watched any of the sessions. I am going to rely on you guys to tell me which talks I absolutely should not miss, which ones were just “okay” and which ones I should positively avoid at all costs. (My mind goes back a number of years to Sister Beck’s talk, “Mother Who Know,” which just about caused me to never watch Conference again.) I know that, as I write this, we’ve only had the Saturday session, but I really do hope some of you good people will help me out here.

You know, I never even thought the murals in the Salt Lake Temple were all that good. Maybe it’s just how murals are, but they always seemed kind of flat and lacking in perspective to me. And somehow, Lucifer picking a virtual apple off a tree and Eve taking bite out of thin air just never did it for me. Some of the other artwork in the temple is excellent, and I suspect that most of it will remain. The Salt Lake Temple interior has such beautiful woodwork. That’s what I hope they’ll decide to keep.

Personally, since I work (in non-Covid times) in Salt Lake City tourism, I’m just excited for the open house where non-LDS people from all over the world will be able to go through the temple. I am really looking forward to that!

Trust me. Live endowment ceremonies are awful. You’ve got an 80-year-old Adam and a 75-year-old Eve, and then there’s Elohim forgetting his lines and having to be prompted by Lucifer. I’m sorry, but I, for one, will be thrilled to get rid of the live ceremonies. The Salt Lake Temple is huge and I’m sure a lot of the artwork, etc. will still be preserved. Also, moving large groups of people from one room to another three or four times is time-consuming. The length of the endowment will be shortened. Maybe I’ll start going there again when it reopens. I’ve been avoiding it like the plague for years.
