ParticipantI suppose it is a bit of a ‘push button’ issue for me, and one that I feel quite strongly about. I think I looked at the timing of the article and had pre-conceived notions about the subject matter. Having read it again, I realise this. I suppose the church should be expected to defend it’s position, but it’s not doing so in a overt way. I still take issue with some seriously flawed logic in regards to belief in deity and moral boundaries and decisions. In the same paragraph he states that intolerance comes from atheism, and I think the exact opposite is often the case.

ParticipantI guess it’s all about perspective Sam. There is no doubt that society is significantly different to how it was 10 years ago, let alone 20 or 50. That doesn’t mean that it is necessarily worse. There were plenty of vices in the past, and it could be argued that they are less of a problem today as we are much more open about them. kristmace
ParticipantI’m in a strange place regarding the BOM because of this. It has always been down the pecking order of the standard works for me personally. Even as a missionary, I incessantly read the New Testament and D&C. I remember with some investigators we read D&C more than the BOM. The teachings of Christ and the history of the church always seemed paramount. Now I have doubts about the authenticity of the BOM, for me, there isn’t a lot that I feel the book can give to me at the moment.

ParticipantI’m pretty pleased to be able to say that I don’t remember that….

Best comment on this forum!

ParticipantI agree Ray. As time passes, church leadership does seem to becoming more populated with Ivy League graduates and business executives.

ParticipantHi and welcome. I hope you find some comfort from the people on this forum. MormonThink is an interesting topic. I’ve read quite a lot of it over the last few weeks, and I’ve been trying to balance it out by reading FAIRLds rebuttals. From my experience they both take the opposite side of an argument and constructive reasoning tends to place me somewhere in the middle. There are lots of issues that MT raises that it does very well, and others not so. Equally some Fair rebuttals are very good and others are awful!

ParticipantExcellent thread thank you! I would add some to this:
1) BOM
– Cumorah location as defined in the book is clearly not in upstate NY
– Barges that carried the Jaredites seems impossible (a years supply of everything, sanitation, space, etc)
– Text changes (deemphasis on racial issues and slight changes to doctrine)
2) LBGT
– Push towards mixed orientation marriages is dangerous
– Financial/Tithing assistance to Prop 8 and challenges
3) Racial issues
– Slavery support (divine institution)
– Modern denial of reasoning
– Support for apartheid
4) Finances
– Mall/BYU costs (worldwide church)
– Humanitarian Aid fund sitting idle in UK church account for years (2004-2011)
5) Masonic connections
– Huge overlap in ceremony and details
– Changes over the years to cover this up
6) Political opinions
– Right Wing opinions seen as truth (guns, abortion, capital punishment)
– Anti-Communism from Apostles and prophets
7) Academia
– Supression of academics at BYU
– Attempts to censor
– Excommunication of academics
TL; DR. Hope this is of interest

ParticipantHi, and welcome. I think you’re the person I’ve been talking to on FB, and it’s nice yet heartbreaking to read your story. Looking forward to your input on here.

ParticipantThere’s an irony that the church is very much against debt, and is proud to boast that as an organisation it has no debt then at the same time encourage members to become indebted in order to meet financial obligations to the church. kristmace
ParticipantThanks for that Mormonheretic. I read that a few weeks ago and couldn’t put it down. Absolutely fascinating. kristmace
ParticipantRich, Great to see you around these boards. Hope you and your family are ok, I’ve not seen any of your for a good few years now. One of my fondest memories in my early years in the church was your wife teaching me in primary.
I assume that you’ve read my recent introduction, and being so early in my ‘crisis’ I would love any advice you have to offer on these forums. It’s incredibly reassuring to realise that people who you know in the church feel the same/similar.

ParticipantSam, that sounds like a great relationship. I’m sure a lot of people would be very envious. My issue at the moment is that I can’t see a quick fix to my issues as there aren’t clear answers. It’s going to be something I canstantly struggle with it seems.
