But I think it’s more likely that we are in the mindset of people who survived the depression. Now that we have money, we can’t help but wash and reuse our tin foil “just in case.” It’s nearly impossible to get people in this frame of mind to realize that they probably went too far to get where they are.

I do think this is part of it. I would say that if they would have been disclosing even at a high level, they probably would have gotten some of the feedback even from TBM members that this may need to be brought under control. Now it has had yet another weight on some people’s shelves that top leadership can’t always be trusted. And from the book “Bridges” and “The Next Mormons”, that loss of trust of the leaders is a huge issue. It is still the main issue I have.

After gritting my teeth a bit and trying to step back, here is my take.

On one level this is not specific to the LDS church. At least in the US this is a political question of the purpose and rules around religious non-profits. The main conclusion I come from here and feel the most important things would be for “large” religious non-profits to be required to submit publicly available financial reports.

As a member, I have a harder time. Given how much $ I have given and even more importantly, how hard the leadership requires tithing – especially comments like “if you don’t have money for food, pay your tithing.” That feels to me like forcing lower-income people to be dependent upon the church. If you pay tithing THEN we will give you food from the bishop’s storehouse. For members with higher income, there is the “you have to pay the country club fees if you want to attend a wedding there (yes – they have relaxed this a bit, but still LOTS of social, logistical, and cost pressures to “just do the temple wedding”). So as a member I would like to see more disclosure and in the end, I have to decide if I want to continue to pay tithing or not. I am currently contemplating changing my status.

Glad you found this site. It can help quite a bit.

I only have a few minutes to write as I have a meeting coming up in a moment.

A faith crisis can be emotionally gut-wrenching. Figure out how to calm yourself and trust yourself. Slow down and don’t make any rash decision. It will get better.

Also be careful who you tell what early on. Some things you can’t take back and some people will over-react.

Feel free to bring up situations and ask for ideas of how you might approach them. You will have quite a few before long I suspect.

    You will be OK.

The last time I sub’ed for Gospel Doctrine I spent about 3 hours looking mainly at other sources and learned a TON of information. The lesson outline in the book could be read in about 3 minutes. I was able to give the context of what was going on and other meanings that were not touched on in lesson book. The only negative is it didn’t really create much of an exchange. It was more me talking.

    So good for you.

I agree with it moving from “crisis” to “transition” and just being a bit more calm about it. Being able to be less “triggered”. But it was not a point in time and occasionally I can still get triggered, but it is now months between being triggered and I get over it quicker (sometimes in a minute or two).

So I suspect you are getting there, but you will kind of know it once you get there and you will feel comfortable where you are.

    Best of luck!

They have had discussions about this topic. marriage on a tightrope also has a podcast.

California just changed the law removing the statute of limitation on reporting child molestation. There have been many lawyer commercials on TV advertising their services. They don’t mention any particular organization, but you get the idea that BSA and the Catholic church are who they are after.

Those do seem to be the 2 biggest targets. I do kind of wonder if LDS and JW’s get dragged into any of these. Of course the BSA and the LDS church have been somewhat intertwined. It could be that some suits go after the BSA, but the troop was LDS and this might come up as the story is told – either in court or just to the public such as documentaries.

I have heard of it. I would 100% agree that this isn’t the same issue as within the catholic church. That seems to be much more about the church knowing priests were sexually abusing kids and they just move the priest to cover it up.

The issues I have heard about are much more like the issues within the Jehovah’s Witnesses. More of being worried about the good name of the church over helping victims and instead doing more to help to try and just keep the story quiet.

I do think there have been improvements in the church, both from society affecting members and some small steps from the church. But like was mentioned, to some extent it was just a matter of time as more people are feeling embolden to not stay quiet about past abuses. This isn’t just about the church, it is about this issue in society at large.

    More of the same. Yep.

I have heard that he is probably motivated by legal fears and is trying to make it so that the church has a legal leg to stand on if someone in the future wants to sue the church in some of these areas.

I don’t live close to Utah and I run into ward members all the time in their “gym” clothes at ALL times of the day – even when the gyms are all closed. Whatever.

But then again, we did have a bishop that loved to run and he would run shirtless in the neighborhood when it was hot.

Amen on people focusing more on policing others that just trying to improve one’s self.

I wonder if they are going to keep it somewhat vague on if you HAVE to wear garments at night. The statement they would read as part of the interview got into details of “working in the yard” or something like that. I think for some this is not a minor issue. I have seen many women talking about needing more “breathing” in certain areas or some infections are more likely. Many of the changes have been after years of petitioning (civil weddings a few days before sealing, YW theme including heavenly parents, 2 hour church). So I would like it if they are talking about “nighttime” being optional that they clarify otherwise the Nazi underwear police can cause friction in marriages where they don’t see eye to eye on this topic.

My initiatory freaked me out a bit (back when you were near naked and people touching you in ways that was not sexual or anything, but made me very uncomfortable). So I never went back and did them again. So what exactly is said there? (if anyone feels comfortable saying)
