But if the leaders are weak – making their teachings weak- then it makes the whole thing weak

you know I LOVE the stuff about family

    plan of slavation

    and all that stuff

(tithing is an issue for me now because of everything else but thats another story)

but take away all those “bricks”

and i feel that I am left with a really rotten foundation built on sand

i am NOT trying to take away what anyone else beleives or thinks

i am just really frustrated right now

the first season was shown here in the uk as I was first converted and i watched it with interest

i couldnt keep watching it as it was on quite late (possibly due to the lack of interest in Mormons here in the UK lol)

I found that first episode very respectful but I have only heard about it since then – and have probably been given a rather distorted view

Many thanks for clearing those things up

Personally, I think masturbation should be mentioned in the general standards and simply not emphasized anywhere else – especially in interviews. That’s my two cents’ worth.

so you mean its in general standards such as “r” rated movies and such like

so more of a strong recomendation not a comandment?

    Ok here it goes

this is a hang up I have

I am a convert to the church so have experienced a LOT before marriage

I had sex (and quite a bit of it) before i joined the church – and although I understand now that sex is best kept in a marriage – there are some parts of the law of chastity that I think personally make things more difficult in a married couples sex life

masturbation is one of those things – or at least how much it is frowned upon

As someone struggling in faith and someone who is trying to make sense of it all I am trying to understand where others might come from in their opinions

do you think that it is dirty and just sinful

or do you have any other thoughts?

OK I have had a thought here

Unfortunatly any church has stories of abuse

be it physical, mental, sexual or spiritual

This may be for any number of reasons, and because I dont want to be seen to be talking badly about any other church I will use some hypothetical situations in the LDS church

Lets say a girl of 15 goes to her bishop to confess something, such as self gratification (even at 27 i have difficulty with this subject lol)

Could there be an opening for abuse OF COURSE thats not to say it will happen but there is gonna be some opening there for it to happen because there is a man in power and a young girl there.

Now what if she said he did abuse her in any of the ways above,

we wouldnt know if it happened or not

    its his word against hers

OK I KNOW its not likely to happen because MOST of the time it wouldnt happen like that BUT what if….

why leave everyone open to this

    so what are the options

have the girls parents in there with her (laughable – NO girl no matter what her age wants to talk about that side of her sexuality in front of her mum or dad)

have a friend of the girls there (nope that still leaves things open and risks there)

have the YW president there INSTEAD of the bishop

not sure that she would have the right “keys” to deal with the situation

what about having the bishop there to “mediate” between the girl and God

AND the YW Pres there to just be there for the girl

emotional support and to also help stop anything from happening or stop untrue accusations

    thoughts?

    Hey there

Ive read your post a number of times and have been finding it hard to find the words to say

I am in a slightly different situation than yourself – my wife and I are both members who fell inactive and I am currently working hard on trying to regain a testimony whereas my wife seems to not want to

However she doesnt resent me wanting to

I personally think one day we will both be back at church fully active just not any time soon

BUT I can empathise and relate in a way

I lived at home with my mum when I converted and it was not an easy time for me

She has a lot against the church – not really its people – just the church as a whole

    The tithing

    The temple work

    The 3 hour meetings

The fact that I wouldnt go buy ciggies for her on sunday anymore

its all very strange at times

all I can say is stay strong in your faith

Its a lot harder to let it get to the stage I did then work back

be well and send me a pm if you want

I read something fascinating about this and I think it was over at mormonmatters

I will summarise the basic points that hit me (disclaimer I take no credit for the content and am not trying to infringe any copyright)

Basically we have here in J.S. a man who was not really well educated

Most people that were coming to the church at that time had the same kind of education as himself not that good

So when Joseph was pondering the way to teach all these deep doctrines to the saints – he at first didnt know what to do

through a chain of events he joined the masons and saw a group of men (yes only men in the masons) learning all these things by MEMORY

all these things they had to do and they could LEARN IT

this meant that in that time the saints could memorize this kind of ceremony and get to understanding what was behind it

so he adapted and used it
