I am also greatly disappointed. This is a bad decision.

Our ward Facebook page is seldom used, especially by the current and past bishopric. Same with my old ward facebook page.

I have been paying my tithing online for probably a decade, even before the Church embraced it. When I went to tithing settlement this year, my bishop was a bit perplexed because the old method does not show up on his records. He was a little stunned (he is a fairly new bishop) that I declared full tithe payer despite his records showing $0. So that is one purpose, but the Community of Christ embraces the old-style definition of bishop as in charge of finances. Here in Utah, Carla Long is a bishop over several congregations and is in charge of financial affairs. I don’t know if she does tithing settlement with her people–I doubt it because doing it for several congregations would be much more difficult, but it would be interesting to ask her.

Yes, that is true. Pretty much from their founding, they have had deaconnesses who also administered sacrament to women who couldn’t come to church. They have had deaconnesses since the 1850s-60s and used the Bible to justify the practice. Historian Daniel Stone is a member of their church and discusses it: https://gospeltangents.com/2018/09/22/biblical-support-ordain-women/

An update. My wife went to Dallas for her first treatment for AIRROSTI. She thought it helped. She is supposed to do 3-4 treatments. The Dallas chiropractor told her about a chiropractor in SLC that was trained in Dallas. She went to SLC guy, and she didn’t think he was as good as the Dallas guy, but she hasn’t had a migraine for 2 weeks, so that is promising. SLC guy went on vacation, so she hasn’t been able to complete the treatments yet.

She said she kind of knows when a migraine is coming, so she puts pressure on her shoulder/neck like the Dallas guy did, and that has staved them off. I recommended to her that she go back to the Dallas guy is she likes him better. We would love to have this resolved. (It’s been going on 5-6 years.) I’m hoping this might be our solution finally!!! It’s a good sign so far.

I’ll keep you all posted, but I am encouraged. This seems like the best treatment so far.

I agree with you SD. I don’t want to be on a radar any more than I already am.

New article that says “sex addiction” isn’t real either: https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/whatever-harvey-weinstein-he-no-sex-addict-experts-say-n809861

I’ve always been impressed with Community of Christ and Greek Orthodox churches. Similarities with CoC is obvious, but Greek Orthodox believe in theosis which is similar to Mormon exaltation. They also do baptism by immersion (even baptizing infants that way–seems a little tortuous, but no sprinkling!)

In the Catholic BIble, there’s a woman named Jael who cuts off an enemy’s head–kind of a female war hero.

The thought occurred to me about prophetic succession. With Pres Monson’s dementia, it seems like it would be a good time for someone else to step in. However, with Nelson and Oaks recent talks on gays, it almost seems that would be worse. I used to be worried about Packer succeeding Monson, but unless those 3 die in quick succession, I don’t think we’ll see any real changes any time soon, even if other apostles don’t like the gay policy.

With the gerontocracy, it almost seems like we have to pray for these men to die. I wish there was another way, but I’m alarmed by Oaks & Nelson. I’ve long advocated for a change in succession policy, but if Monson dies, I’m not a fan of either of these 2 men taking the top job.

    GAHHHH

About a week and a half ago, I was informed the stake president was holding a “secret meeting” with all adults in the ward and young women were going to take care of primary. Well stake president wasn’t there, but missionaries from the LDS Addiction Recovery program were there. I was hoping it was about addiction, but it was about pornography! (There was a mention of eating disorders, and a head nod to drugs, but it was by far about pornography addiction.)

I wanted to get up and leave, but decided to do genealogy on my tablet instead. I wanted to ask the following questions, but of course there was no time for questions.
• Have you seen the BYU study at the beginning of this thread?

Are you aware what Elizabeth Smart has said regarding modesty shaming? (although Smart does believe in addiction, so she’s a mixed bag there)

How does one know if one is addicted? Is once-week addiction?

Are you aware that some thing addiction is the wrong word to use in LDS culture?

Are you aware that the biggest problems with addiction come from religious communities like the Wasatch Front and Bible Belt? Why is that?

Do you talk to real sex therapists about whether the addiction model is the best approach?

  •
Part of me wants to take my concerns to the stake president (although he wasn’t there which makes me wonder if this was simply the bishop’s idea with the stake president tacit approval), but I wonder if it will do any good.

She’s been to sooooo many doctors, neurologists, physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncture and none have helped. You get desperate. But she’s not willing to try the piercing just yet. (She’s not that desperate.) However, she just told me that she felt a migraine coming on, but she did something the chiropractor told her, and it may have helped. If this works, I’m not only going to recommend it to anyone who has migraines, but I’m going to contact our lawyer and tell him this helped her. (Our lawyer had some specialists he recommended, but they didn’t help.)

I disagree completely Beefster. I got married at age 32, and attended lots of singles wards from North Ogden to Provo. Living in Davis County, our singles ward was dissolved by our stake president (which was against the rules, because even though we didn’t meet, our bishop wasn’t officially released for about 6-9 months.) Anyway, I attended a conventional ward for 9 months. I hated it. I went to my bishop, told him that I was going to pay tithing to the ward, but I was going to ward hop and find a singles ward to attend. He was totally cool, admitted he didn’t know what to do with me (at the time I was the Single Adult Sunday School teacher for 3 people) and wished me luck.

I met my wife soon after that, in Moab on a singles ward activity in which neither one of us were actually in the ward. I have a testimony of ward-hopping.

After I got married, I returned to the ward, now with a new bishop. My wife liked the ward better than I did–perhaps I was too jaded from my previous experience. Funny thing was, I was put in as Activities Committee Director (again!!! I had 2 stints in singles’ wards) and my conventional bishop had a much heavier hand in planning than either of my 2 previous singles’ ward bishops. In my singles ward, we had overnighters up to the Snake River. Conventional bishop did an overnighter to Fort Laramie, which was ok, but he wanted to get much more involved in planning than singles ward bishops did. I found that VERY strange.

We had a newborn and discovered they had a few small cabins, so we picked that. My son cried all night long. I can’t imagine it being in a tent which would have been way worse. Anyway, I’ve often said that I wished I could go back to the singles wards. Lessons were better prepared. Sacrament meeting was more reverent. I love my wife, and I’m glad I don’t have to date anymore, but I miss being in a singles ward. I really enjoyed it.

I have a post on lots of strange BoM geography theories. One of them is African, but it is Eritrea, up in North East Africa, and has been widely debunked by BYU. However, after learning about the Lemba tribe in southern Africa (Zimbabwe) which does seem to claim jewish origins, it makes me wonder if these are the “dark and loathsome” Lamanites. I don’t know about a narrow neck of land, but maybe we should start brainstorming there! It makes DNA sense, elephants and horses are plentiful, probably grain, matches rough timeline of Lehi, etc.
