ParticipantI would mention that it is much more damaging to have a porn problem and be married than have a porn problem when you are single. April 6, 2013 at 10:36 am in reply to: For those that know the sticky past but remain stalwart. #169068rebeccad
ParticipantThe analogy of walking up to other people’s children and telling them there is no Santa is apt. Of course there are children, once they don’t believe in Santa that want to go around and tell everyone they meet. It is a natural instinct, but not looked upon kindly by others.
There is an amazing woman in my ward who has a very literal faith (Jesus drank grape juice, not wine, etc) there are many things she believes in that just aren’t true. However she clings to it, and her faith is a fire that has pulled her through difficulties that I can’t imagine. She has constant struggles with her family and doggedly works to do her best for them, and her faith is what gets her through. I enjoy listening to her testimonies and am inspired by them. The truth in this situation is the power and hope that her faith gives her, that is very real and very literal and listening to her speak is one of the reasons I go to church.
I am careful in my statements in church to stick to things that I do believe while not challenging the beliefs of others, finding common ground, just as we are asked to do when discussing the our religion with members of other religions. When someone says something look for the truth in it. Ex. Joseph Smith was studying and praying about which church to join when he had a powerful spiritual experience that changed to course of his life and inspired him to establish a different church entirely.

I agree. So why are we being subjected to this? Put it on the ash heap! Not sure what you mean by being subjected. If the question is why is this even in the D&C or why are they commenting on it, I assume it is because it is such a big issue in church history.
Quote:Unless an angel with a flaming sword shows up or something…
💡 😆 If an angel with a flaming sword shows up I’ll just let him kill me and take my chances with God, thanks.

ParticipantThis is really interesting. I have gone through a few of the changes and it is an interesting insight into what is going on. I am excited as it is high time for a new edition of the scriptures. Perhaps hymnbooks will be next. The biggest thing for me is this:
Quote:The Book of Mormon teaches that “all are alike unto God,” including “black and white, bond and free, male and female” (2 Nephi 26:33).
MALE AND FEMALE!!!! they didn’t quote the whole verse, they quoted very selected phrases and there is no reason why they needed to include male and female to make the point about the priesthood declaration. Put that together with the much lower mission age for young women meaning many more sisters on missions, and the fact that Relief Society and Priesthood and YM/YW’s now have the same curriculum. It really makes me wonder if the church is leaning towards giving women the priesthood.
Seriously when I read that phrase in that context it was like an electric shock. Here’s hoping….

ParticipantOne of my favorite parts about traveling in Egypt is the wide array of drinks offered there since drinking alcohol is “discouraged”. I do buy hot chocolate from the coffee shop on cold mornings, it is comforting to hold a warm cup on a cold day.

ParticipantAs others have said, Gospel is different from the church. I believe totally in the Gospel as defined in 3 Nephi 27. It ends with this summary: Quote:Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do;
Since I believe in this definition, and this definition was part of the restoration from Joseph Smith, I feel I can answer this question yes.

ParticipantI don’t think it really makes sense to compare Haun’s Mill to MMM. 17 deaths vs. 140 is really not even in the same category. My grandmother actually met one of the victims. He was a child that wasn’t killed in the massacre, and was found and adopted by an Indian tribe. He became friends with her family (she was born in 1908 so he would have been an old man and she a child) and was an artist and calligrapher and made her a gift that she showed to me when she was in her 90’s.
MMM seems a very Old Testament type action. To me, it points out that people need to decide what to do when religion teaches something that seems immoral. Killing people in the name of God is one of those times. For me decided what to do about same-sex marriage is another.

ParticipantI agree with Ray. Use it as a place of quiet contemplation. No reason you need to focus on the ceremony, just use it as a time that you can meditate on other things. And being married to “one of us” as a TBM can be really difficult as well, sometimes it is helpful to do things that make it a little easier.

ParticipantIn small wards it can obviously be a result of there just not being that many families. In larger wards I think it can be self perpetuating. Leaders call people they know and have worked with in the past, so the group of leadership tends to shift around but not add new people.

ParticipantWow, that is great. January 30, 2013 at 11:18 pm in reply to: Surely I’m not the only one who has thought of this idea #165695rebeccad
ParticipantI’m unfamiliar with specifics of reincarnation, just casually familiar with it. Where can I read more about different beliefs involving it?
I really am interested in the idea that reincarnation may involve a non-linear time. (living different lives at the same ‘time’)

ParticipantQuote:In the debate, it’s never mentioned that some parties stand to make a lot of money (will Greenwich village become a gay Las Vegas)? And that’s their motivation.
People will never tire of making moral issues of things that they only interested in financially.
When I lived in Colorado there was a ballot initiative about allowing slot machines at dog tracks. The air time was filled with commercials about the evils of gambling, how it brings bad influences into the neighborhood, is addictive, basically everything up to it starts with G and that rhymes with T and that’s trouble.
I wondered what church or civic group had enough money to pay for such a lot of advertising. Turns out they didn’t, those ads were all paid for by the casinos, who didn’t want competition.

ParticipantOutofstep- That is exactly what the home teaching program is supposed to do. It doesn’t most of the time, but the fact that it works sometimes makes it worth keeping around, IMO. rebeccad
ParticipantQuote:Let people marry who they want! If we’re going to teach that marriage in required for the celestial kingdom but gay’s shouldn’t marry, aren’t we essentially damming a group of people?
I agree, I hope that the church gets there someday.

ParticipantI found that website this week when googling for something, I don’t remember what it was now. They must have good search optimization. I didn’t look at it closely though, thanks for the info.
