I got given this at Christmas, and although it’s a load of hooey (most of the history is, certainly), it was a guilty pleasure. (Much better than the Da Vinci Code, which had me wincing continually.)

It was a good page turner, but I thought the ending was a bit weak. (Yes, I know there is a tie in with some Mormon thought, but that’s not why)

I have to admit I get confused over the old meaning of “suffer”. I remember in a discussion with missionaries I had over the meaning of the phrase “suffer it to be so”, which doesn’t really work in modern English.

Maybe we’re getting into Buddhist territory here, they believe existence is a form of suffering.

p.s. Actually on second thoughts, there is one hint he might have married. He gets referred to as “rabbi” a number of times (this gets hidden a lot of time in the King James Bible, but it’s there in the Greek). According to tradition, rabbis, unlike Catholic priests were supposed to be married before they got ordained.

I think Jesus certainly existed. There’s more evidence for him than many people of the same period. After all, if you weren’t a military or political leader, or royalty, you were very unlikely to be recorded at all.

However, I think Jesus has been completely embellished and misrepresented. Jesus told us to love the poor and look after them, yet I see so called Christians using his religion to bring in measures which effectively punish the poor and/or make them poorer. How can we use Jesus to justify war, big business or out and out hatred? But people do.

I know in the COJCLDS, we’re supposed to say Jesus was married. I don’t know of any evidence for that really. Although Dan Brown seems to think there is!

How can I talk to these people? Virtually every non-church topic ends up like this.

I’ve only read the first page of this topic so far, but my two cents would be that it’s quite simple…

All you have in common with these people is your church. It happens. All through life I’ve bumped into people who I have little in common with, and little to talk about with… it’s not like the church has the monopoly on such people, they’re everywhere. Most human beings are mediocre – doesn’t make them bad folk, just a bit boring. I live in suburbia, so I should know!
