ParticipantIn my simple mind the Gospel is the two great commandments. Everything else is an addition. Thoreau
ParticipantGhostman, You have found a bunch of likeminded people. Once again, welcome, and enjoy your stay.

I feel old sometimes – then I wait for cwald to comment so I can feel younger.
:silent: I joined the Chruch about 1979 as a married adult with one kid. Does that help you feel younger?

ParticipantWelcome Ghostman, My disaffection started in full speed when I was ordained a high priest. I already had doubts but that seemed to clinch it. One of my thoughts was if I am having doubts then why am I being ordained a high priest and where is the inspiration.
I am also a member of NOM but have stayed mostly away the last few months. They are a great bunch of folks but I found myself getting angry when I was browsing the forums. I find StayLDS more mellow but at the same time very cerebral. Almost too much for me because I like to skim the forums and move on. Maybe it’s because some of our members make me think too much.
What I really wanted to comment on was this ” It all started when I became disillusioned with some tenets of the Gospel.” What tenents of the Gospel or did I miss them? I often ask the question, What is the Gospel? To me it isn’t the LDS Church or the whole of its teachings. To me the Gospel is plain and simple. It is
“36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great acommandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Just my thoughts.

ParticipantWatched parts 1 and 2 yesterday, part 3 today. Part 3 is very powerful. I saw someone that was trying his hardest to do everything right only to be cast off. Thoreau

ParticipantShow and express your love for her. Don’t deliberately antagonize her. Some examples:
If you’ve been to the temple and wearing garments are important to her then wear your garments unless it really causes severe internal conflict. It it does then work it out.
If you following the Word of Wisdom is important to her then follow the Word of Wisdom.
Go to church with her, at least sacrament meeting.
Avoid conflict.
Find friends outside of church that you both can be friends with and that threaten her.
Talk about things. If the discussion gets heated then back away.
Don’t try to change her. Let her change herself.

ParticipantI’ve been suffering from occasional mild depression for a number of years now. I finally admitted it to myself and got into free counseling through the VA. Talking has helped a lot. Exercise helps. For me spending time outdoors helps, it’s my happy place. LIght, lots of sunlight. Don’t take ownership of things others have done. Realize that you are a good person and are doing the best the can. Like Shakespeare said, “This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

ParticipantI’m not agreeing with the “policy” or even saying it is a written policy. As I understand it our wards and stakes are arranged in geographical units to keep members from shopping around and picking what ward they want to belong to. It is another thing that differentiates us from other denominations. I don’t know if a bishop or stake president can actually take your temple recommend for attending another ward instead of your “assigned” ward on a regular basis. I think part of it is that if you don’t attend your own ward then the bishop has nothing to base issuing or denying a temple recommend on except for your own answers. I think if you haven’t been in the ward for at least year the bishop is supposed to contact your previous bishop. I don’t think this happens very often. I just had my temple recommend renewed and I’ve been in this ward for only five months and as far as I know my previous leader was not contacted. Back to the temple recommend questions. It could come down to how the leader interprets sustaining the local leaders.

ParticipantVerse 9 of Section 89 says hot drinks are not for the body or the belly. Verse 10 says all wholesome herbs have been ordained by God for the use of man. Let the tea cool down like it says so it isn’t hot and use it a wholesome herb.

ParticipantInteresting that a reference under tithing doesn’t show up for Deuteronomy 14: 28 & 29 in the paper copy of the topical guide. Thoreau
ParticipantQuote:28 ¶At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:
29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.
Deuteronomy 14: 28 & 29
I did a search on my iPad Gospel Library application and this scripture did show up. I did a search on LDS.org and it showed up. I wonder why it worked for me.
I understand this a little bit differently but I see where one can get the idea that 1/3 of tithes are to go to the poor. What I see is that every third year tithes are made available to the Levite and others who are in need to meet their needs. I think our practice of fast offerings provides the same thing (except for the Levites) and it provides all the time instead of every third year.
