I liked her book. I didn’t feel like I really had any family to recommend it to, but it was enjoyable for me. Thankfully, things have changed a lot. In 2012 there is a large community of positive Mormons of all stripes. I look forward to meeting you. Tom
I went to the Unitarian service this Christmas. It was really nice. I found out that the preacher’s family has been Unitarian since before Mormonism existed. ! There weren’t many people there (at all). Can you tell her you don’t yourself accept the whole LDS religion hook, line, and sinker, and you’d be happy to hear her thoughts about religion any time? I think it’s an obstacle to spiritual growth, and thus is a false teaching, one of those philosophies of men mingled with the scriptures. This can be a really hard facet of church membership at this time for some of us. I wasn’t able to do it without resolving in my mind that the recommend was less important to me than the truth. I’ll probably be ending a year-long recommend gap in the next few weeks. I’m pretty much open about my position, and I don’t mind answering some of the questions “wrong”. To me, honest exploration is deeply important to my peace and happiness. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’m just learning to be assertive at the ripe old age of 44, and I appreciate the slack you cut me. I think it would have been better for me to say something like:
