ParticipantBest of luck. Personally, I don’t believe homosexuality is a sin anyway. I hope it all works out for you. vickzorz
ParticipantThanks for your responses. I like the idea of taking a mental break, especially since I do enjoy the social aspect at church, some of my dearest friends are there. I will be moving back to my home country in a couple months, so perhaps when I return I just won’t transfer my records to the new ward, and just wait it out a bit. DA, I agree that the expectation checklist can be overwhelming. I don’t follow the “minor” rules anymore (ex. extra piercings, modesty, swearing, drinking), and it amazed me how guilty I felt at first, since I’ve been raised to think that doing these things would put my soul in peril. A lot of my frustration is how the church focuses on external, superficial markers of “righteousness”, so I’m hoping with this time off I can find other spiritual avenues— maybe I will try meditation again.
IloveChrist77, I hope it all works out, I can only imagine that autism and OCD would make the culture even harder to handle.

ParticipantGah that sounds so infuriating…. I got angry when I heard the same type of comments in YW too. I think this image just sums it up though: http://feministmormonhousewives.tumblr.com/post/41145584070/i-belong-to-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of vickzorz
ParticipantPersonally, I am all for women’s ordination. It is very sad to me that our church has virtually no female leadership (160+ men to the 9 women in Primary, YW and RS). That’s even less representative than most Arab parliaments. If you haven’t already, make sure you check out Feminist Mormon Housewives blog, they have some excellent posts on this topic.

ParticipantHonestly, if things like this could ever be acknowledged in manuals or even GC talks, that would be excellent. It is only recently that I ever heard of things like Mountain Meadows, ties with Masonry, seer stones, BoA issues, etc and it was very difficult for me to reconcile. I told my sister about JS having plural wives, and she thought that I had been reading anti-mormon literature and refused to believe that it was true historical fact. I think there is a tendency within some TBMs to discount any internet sources that aren’t directly Church-affiliated, call them anti-mormon, etc. But with today’s internet culture, I think it is vital that the church become a bit more honest and open about their past, something I think they are starting to do if the changes to the Standard Works are any indication. But still a long way to go…. vickzorz
ParticipantThanks so much for that story… I needed to read that today. It can be really satisfying to seek (and find) discrepancies, especially with church material, but I am very guilty of being quick to find fault, only to be completely off the mark. vickzorz
ParticipantThanks for the input, I am glad to see the church progress and change but I guess sometimes it just feels way too slow. Also trying to handle the Prophet, Apostles, etc. being the servants of God, but also faillible men who say incorrect things. How do we know when they are speaking for God and when they are speaking personally? To clarify, I really do like the church at the local level, where I am– people are kind, it’s very multicultural, many opportunities to serve and learn. I just have issues with the institution on the larger scale, like with some of the things Sam Bee mentioned (commercialism, whitewashing). I’m looking forward to reading more posts and hopefully contributing!
