ParticipantSD, I don’t think you have lost your reward. I think we could make a very harsh interpretation of the scripture you cited as a starting point for an argument in that direction, but I think such an argument would be too hasty and not nuanced enough. Note that the Lord says “take heed”, not “just forget about any thought of a reward in heaven”. I think you have as many rewards in Heaven waiting for you as you have good intentions, and I think among your motivations for service you have many good intentions.
Regards, Willhe

ParticipantGood grief! The people who think they can cure the mentally ill are more dangerous than the mentally ill. Thanks, but no thanks, Bishop. August 11, 2017 at 2:40 am in reply to: James Hamula, First Quorum of the Seventy, Excommunicated #219770Willhewonder
ParticipantSay what you will about narrowing the speculation field, at least we will not be poring over every single conference talk or other communication from Elder Hamula to determine which things he said the Church Authorities think should be thrown out. Perhaps he said some very important things that the Church does not want discounted. I’m so sad for him and his family and friends. Willhewonder
ParticipantI used to get peeved on my mission at people who wouldn’t listen to us because their parents religion was good enough for them. Now do I find myself cutting people off because their parents religion isn’t good enough for them? Some mote and beam in the eye stuff going on with that, I think. I’m sorry for your loss. I’m sorry for my losses going the other way, and I have some. Willhewonder
ParticipantHello Beefster, You sound a lot like I do (inside my own head, anyway) only you seem to have gotten there about 50 years younger than I did. This is a great place. I’m looking forward to hearing you weigh in on things and hearing your questions.
Regards.

ParticipantThree things, short and punchy – well, OK, they’re useful. Four things is a discussion, a discourse, another 13 Articles of Faith. Too much of that stuff already. Chuck it. ParticipantYou should read what Sister Laurel Thatcher Ulrich says about women giving blessings in the early church. A House Ful of Femalesis a pretty good read. Before I left for college at BYU, my mother had a “vision/dream” and gathered me and my siblings around ,told us about it, layed her hands on our heads and gave us blessings. I was pretty impressed with my blessing. After I was gone a little while, I called home and my sister answered. I asked what she thought about our blessings. She lowered her voice and hemmed and hawed a bit and then told me my mother had had a nervous breakdown, and was doing better now. So much for my blessing? Someday I’ll know the whole truth about the incident. Willhewonder
ParticipantI use Cyrillic notation for notes that may be seen by others. Course, you have to know who went where on their mission! Willhewonder
ParticipantThanks so much for all your encouraging comments. You are very kind. I think maybe I erred somewhat in using the word “discovery”. It’s not so much that I have discovered the great truths of things as that I have uncovered areas of nuance or divergence from my previous assumptions. So now, what do I put in place of these ideas? I have some ideas, but I’m pretty unsure about many of them and I would very much like some back and forth to help sort them out. When the kids were still at home, I would build elaborate logical structures to determine what decisions should be made about some of their issues. DW would listen to me for awhile and then say,”No, I think we should do this”. And she would be right. My heart told me so. Never mind the elaborate logic. Kind of frustrating, but of great benefit to the children. Maybe you folks in the forum can help in like manner on these things. And I think I’ll post them to the support board, rather that to the discussion board. Thanks again. Willhewonder
ParticipantThanks for posting. I struggle with burnout as well, although I haven’t been in the crucible like you have. I think you will get much help here, and I will be paying close attention your and other’s comments, though I don’t know how much I’ll be able to help. ParticipantSo, in my ward it’s the 10 who do everything, which is one of my problems. Are there some threads here on the 12 who do everything? I tried to search but I think this forum search engine is not the best for that type of wordy search. Willhewonder
ParticipantThis change gets scouts in the Church closer to what it was 50 years ago when I was in scouts. Be hard to go to Mutual now after turning 14, but did you see the note about once a month? Maybe not so bad. Willhewonder
ParticipantSpeaking of this, has anybody done a thread or a book report on The Varieties of Religious Experienceby William James? My son recommended it to me, and it is part of the reason I am here. Willhewonder
ParticipantSamBee, Seriously, I think there maybe something there, I just could not pass up the joke. I agree that this is an area we should keep tabs on.

ParticipantSo, maybe those aluminum foil hats are not such a bad idea after all! 😆 -
